And he fertilized the land, fertilizing it 'adnan': he manured it, meaning he improved it with manure, like he fertilized it; with doubling.

وعدن الشجرة يعدنها عدنا: أفسدها بالفأس ونحوها

And he damaged the tree, damaging it 'adnan': he spoiled it with an axe or the like.

وعدن الحجر عدنا: فلعه بالفأس

And he split the stone 'adnan': he cleaved it with an axe.

سميت بذلك لإقامة أهله فيه دائما لا يتحولون عنه شتاء ولا صيفا

It was named thus because its people resided in it permanently, not moving from it in winter or summer.

أو لإنبات اللها، عز وجل إياه فيه وإثباته إياه في الأرض حتى عدن أي ثبت فيها

Or because Allah, the Almighty, caused it to grow in it and established it in the earth until it became firm, meaning it was fixed in it.

نحو معدن الذهب والفضة والأشياء؛ والجمع المعادن

Like the source of gold, silver, and things; and the plural is 'al-ma'adin'.

ومنه حديث بلال بن الحارث: أنه أقطعه معادن القبلية، وهي المواضع التي تستخرج منها جواهر الأرض

And from it is the hadith of Bilal bin Al-Harith: that he granted him the mines of Al-Qabliyyah, which are the places from which the jewels of the earth are extracted.

Yazid bin Al-Sa'q said: We brought the horses from Tathlith until they arrived at Awarah, then Al-'Adan'.

وقيل: العدان: ساحل البحر كله كالطف

And it was said: Al-'Adan: the entire seacoast, like Al-Taff.

قال لبيد بن ربيعة العامري: ولقد يعلم صحبي كلهم بعدان السيف صبري

Labeed bin Rabiah Al-Amiri said: And all my companions know my patience on the coast of the sword.

قال شمر: عدان موضع على سيف البحر

Shamir said: 'Adan is a place on the seacoast.

قال ابن الأعرابي: العدان: حافة النهر، وكذلك ضفته وعبرته ومعبره وبرغيله

Ibn Al-A'rabi said: Al-'Adan: the edge of the river, as well as its bank, its crossing point, its passage, and its channel.

العدان من الزمان سبع سنين، يقال: مكثوا في غلاء السعر عدانا أو عدانين، وهما أربع عشرة سنة

Al-'Adan from time is seven years; it is said: they stayed during the high prices for 'adanan' or 'adanin', which are fourteen years.

And a bucket with a patch, like 'mu'azzam': its bottom was cut and then sewn with it.

والمعدن، كمحدث: مخرج الصخر من المعدن ثم يكسره يبتغى فيه الذهب ونحوه

And 'al-ma'din', like 'muhdath': the exit of rock from the mine, then breaking it in search of gold and the like.

وبه فسر أبو سعيد قول المخبل: خوامس تنشق العصا عن رؤوسها كما صدع الصخر الثقال المعدن

And with this Abu Sa'id explained the saying of Al-Mukhbil: 'Fifth ones split the staff from their heads, like the heavy rocks of the mine are split'.

والعدودني: السريع من الإبل، أو الشديد منها، أو منسوب إلى فحل اسمه عدودن؛ أو إلى أرض اسمها كذلك

And 'al-'adudani': the swift of camels, or the strong among them, or attributed to a sire named 'Adudun'; or to a land named thus.

وعدن أبين، محركة: جزيرة باليمن أقام بها أبين رجل من حمير فنسب إليه

And 'Adan Abyan', with movement: a peninsula in Yemen where Abyan, a man from Himyar, resided and it was attributed to him.

ويقال فيه إبين، بالكسر، ويبين بالياء، هكذا جزم به غير واحد من الأئمة

And it is said about it 'Ibayyin', with kasra, and 'Yabayin' with ya, thus it was confirmed by more than one of the imams.

وهو ينافي قول المصنف، رحمه الله تعالى

And this contradicts the statement of the author, may Allah have mercy on him.

فإن كلا الموضعين نسب إلى أبين فأحدهما سمي باسمه، والثاني لإقامته فيه كثيرا

For both places are attributed to Abyan; one was named after him, and the second because he resided in it a lot.

ويكفي في تعليل أسماء المواضع أدنى مناسبة

And the slightest suitability is enough to explain the names of places.

وعدن: رجل وهو صاحب عدن؛ فإن صح هذا فقول الفاصل قريب للحق

And 'Adan: a man, and he is the owner of 'Adan'; if this is correct, then the statement of the separator is close to the truth.

فيكون الموضع سمي باسم عدن بن عدنان، وأبين باسم رجل من حمير، وأضيف هذا إليه لقربه منه

So the place was named after 'Adan bin 'Adnan, and Abyan after a man from Himyar, and this was attributed to him due to its proximity to it.

وعدن لاعة: ة بقربه أي بقرب عدن، أضيفت إلى لاعة

And 'Adan La'ah: a village near it, meaning near 'Adan, attributed to La'ah.

The prince said: Thus I found it in the handwriting of Ibn Abda, the genealogist; and Al-Daraqutni pronounced it 'Adiyyah' like 'Sumayyah'.

And Al-Farra' said: The closest in my opinion is that it is 'fa'lan' from 'al-'add' and 'al-'idad', and it has been mentioned in its place.

وخف معدن، كم معظم: زيد في آخر الساق منه زيادة حتى اتسع

And 'ma'din', like 'mu'azzam': an addition was made to the end of its leg until it widened.

والعدان: قبيلة من بني أسد؛ قال الشاعر: بكي على قتل العدان فإنهم طالت إقامتهم بيطن برام

And 'Al-'Adan': a tribe from Banu Asad; the poet said: He wept over the killing of Al-'Adan, for their stay was prolonged in Bayt Ram.

And 'Al-'Adani': one who weaves 'Adani' clothes in Nishapur, among them Abu Sa'd Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin Al-Hariri Al-Nassaj, who died in Baghdad after the thirties of the five hundreds.

وذو عدينة، كجهينة: قرية بثغر باليمن، منها: الحسين بن علي بن الحسين بن إسمعيل الزبيدي العديني الفقيه المحدث، مات سنة نيف وثلاثين وستمائة نقله الحافظ

And Dhu 'Udaynah', like 'Juhaynah': a village in a frontier of Yemen, among them: Al-Husayn bin Ali bin Al-Husayn bin Ismail Al-Zubaidi Al-'Udayni, the jurist and hadith scholar, died in the thirties of the six hundreds, narrated by Al-Hafiz.

وعليه عدنيات: أي ثياب كريمة وأصلها النسبة إلى عدن

And on him are 'Adaniyyat': meaning noble garments, and their origin is the attribution to Aden.

تقول: مرت جوار مدنيات عليهن رياط عدنيات؛ وكثر حتى قيل للرجل الكريم الأخلاق: عدني، كما قيل للنفيس من كل شيء: عبقري كما في الأساس

You say: 'Beautiful women passed by, wearing 'Adani' robes'; and it became common until a man of noble character was called 'Adani', just as the exquisite of everything was called 'Abqari', as in Al-Asas.
