'Athana in the mountain, ya'thunu, 'athnan: to ascend, like 'afana; from Kurā'; and Ya'qub recited: I swear by Him who set Thabir in its place, I will visit you as long as there is an 'āthin (ascender) in the mountain; and it is narrated: 'āfin; and Ya'qub said: it is by substitution.
وعثن الثوب، كفرح: عبق بريح الدخنة.
And the garment 'athina, like fariha: it became fragrant with the smell of smoke.

The hooves of his horse sank into the ground, so he asked them to release them, and its hooves came out, raising dust.
أي دخان. قال الأزهري: وقال أبو عبيد: العثان أصله الدخان، وأراد هنا الغبار شبهه به؛ قال: وكذلك قال أبو عمرو بن العلاء. قال الجوهري: وربما سموا الغبار عثانا.
Meaning smoke. Al-Azhari said: And Abu Ubayd said: Al-'uthānu originally means smoke, and here it means dust, likening it to smoke; he said: And Abu Amr ibn al-'Ala also said so. Al-Jawhari said: And sometimes they call dust 'uthānan.

عثانة، (كثمامة: ماء لجذيمة بن مالك بن نصر في شعبة من الثلبوت؛ وقيل: هو بكسر العين ونونين؛ قاله نصر.
'Uthānah, (like thumāmah): a water source of Judhaymah ibn Malik ibn Nasr in a valley of Al-Thalbūt; and it was said: it is with a kasra on the 'ayn and two nūns; Nasr said.

And al-'uthnūn, (with damma): the entire beard, (or what extends from it beyond the jawbones) from their inner part, and what appears of it is called the sublah.
والعثنون: شعيرات طوال تحت حنك البعير؛ يقال: بعير ذو عثانين، كما قالوا لمفرق الرأس مفارق.
And al-'uthnūn: long hairs under the camel's chin; it is said: a camel with 'uthnānin, just as they called the parting of the head mufāriq.
والعثنون (من الريح والمطر: أولهما؛ عن أبي حنيفة، رحمه اللها تعالى؛ (أو عام المطر، أو المطر ما دام بين السماء والأرض، (ج) عثانين).

Abu Zayd said: Al-'uthānīn is the rain between the clouds and the earth, like the saba, its singular is 'uthnūn.
وعثنون السحاب: ما وقع على الأرض منها؛ قال: بتنا نراقبه وبات يلفناعند السنام مقدما عثنايصف سحابا.
And 'uthnūn of the clouds: what falls from them to the ground; he said: We stayed up watching it, and it stayed wrapping us at the front of the hump, describing clouds.
وعثانين السحاب: ما تدلى من هيدبها.
And 'uthānīn of the clouds: what dangles from their fringes.
وعثنون الريح: هيدبها إذا هي أقبلت تجر الغبار جرا؛ قال جران العود: وبالخط نضاح العثانين واسع
And 'uthnūn of the wind: its fringes when it approaches, dragging dust vigorously; Jarān al-'ūd said: And in Al-Khatt, the splashing of the 'uthānīn is wide.
