Al-Jawharī said: Al-tarqīn: blackening places in calculations so it is not assumed they were left blank, to avoid errors in calculation.
والرقين، كأمير: الدرهم، سمي بذلك للترقين الذي فيه يعنون الخط، عن كراع
And al-raqīn, like amīr: the dirham, named so for the markings within it, meaning the script, according to Kurāʿ.
