وقيل: إظهار خلاف ما يضمر كالإدهان
And it was said: showing the opposite of what is hidden, like 'al-idhan'.
وقال الليث: الإدهان: اللين والمداهن: المصانع
And Al-Layth said: 'Al-idhan' is gentleness, and 'al-mudāhin' is the conciliator.
وفي الحلم إدهان وفي العفو دربة
And in forbearance is 'idhan' (leniency), and in forgiveness is skill.
والدهناء: الفلاة
And 'ad-Dahnā': the desert plain.
نار تصعصع بالدهنا قطا جونا
A fire crackles in 'ad-Dahnā', with dark, sandy embers.
كأنها سليم دهان في طراف مطنب
As if it were a 'salīm' of 'dihān' (red leather) in the fringe of a tent.
ومنه قول مسكين الدارمي: مثل الدهان فكان لي العذر
And from it is the saying of Miskin ad-Darimi: like 'ad-dihān' (a slippery place), so I had the excuse (of success).
