Its origin is 'dawān', and one of the two 'waw's was replaced by a 'ya' because it is plural, meaning it is collected as 'dawāwīn', and if the 'ya' were original, they would have said 'diyāwīn'.

The 'waw' in 'dīwān' remained sound, even though it came after a 'ya' and did not become weak as in 'sayyid', because the 'ya' in 'dīwān' is not inherent. It is rather 'fawwāl' from 'dawanta', and the evidence for that is their saying 'duwaywīn', which indicates it is 'fawwāl' and that you only replaced the 'waw' after that.
