As if there were no people between Al-Hajun and Al-Safa.

أَنِيسٌ وَلَمْ يَسْمُرْ بِمَكَّةَ سامِرٌ

And no one stayed up at night in Mecca.

وَلا بُدَّ مِنْ غَزْوَةٍ في الرَّبيعِ حَجُونٌ تَكِلُّ الوِقاحُ الشُّكُورَا

And there must be an expedition in the spring, a distant one that tires the grateful, strong camels.

سِرْنا عَقَبَةً حَجُوناً، وهي البَعِيدَةُ الطَّوِيلَةُ

We traveled a long, difficult pass, and it was the distant, long one.

فَإِمَّا أَنْ يَكُونَ الشَّيْخُ ابْنُ بَرِّيٍّ وَجَدَ لَهُ وَجْهاً فَنَقَلَهُ أَوْ وَهَمَ فيهِ

Either Sheikh Ibn Barrī found a reason for it and transmitted it, or he made a mistake in it.

وَقَدْ عَرَقَتْ مَغابِنُها وَجادَتْ بَدْرَتُها قُرَى حَجَنٍ قَتِينٍ

And its flanks sweated, and its dewlap provided the sustenance of a tick.

وَهُوَ لَهَبُ بْنُ أَحْجَنَ بْنِ كَعْبِ بْنِ الحارِثِ بْنِ كَعْبِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مالِكِ بْنِ نَصْرِ بْنِ الأَزْدِ

And he is Lahab bin Ahjan bin Ka'b bin Al-Harith bin Ka'b bin Abdullah bin Malik bin Nasr bin Al-Azd.

وَكانَ لَهَبٌ أَعْيَفَ العَرَبِ

And Lahab was the most skilled diviner among the Arabs.

فَإِنَّهُ لا يُرْكِضُ المِحْجَنَ

For he does not make the hooked staff run.

وَإِنْ كانَ ذَكِيّاً رَكَضَ المِحْجَنَ وَمَضى

And if the camel was intelligent, it would make the hooked staff run and move forward.

وَالصَّقْرُ أَحْجَنُ المِنْقارِ

And the falcon has a hooked beak.

وَصَقْرٌ أَحْجَنُ المَخالِبِ: مُعْوَجُّها

And a falcon with hooked talons: its crookedness.

وَإِنَّهُ لَمِحْجَنُ مالٍ: يُصْلِحُ المالَ على يَدَيْهِ ويُحْسِنُ رِعايَتَهُ والقِيامَ عَلَيْهِ

And he is a manager of wealth: he improves wealth through his hands and takes good care of it and oversees it.

قَدْ عَنَتِ الجِلْعَدُ شَيْخاً أَعْجَفَا

The old, weak man has become submissive.

مِحْجَنُ مالٍ أَيْنَما تَصَرَّفَا

A manager of wealth wherever he turns.

وَاحْتِجانُ المالِ: إصْلاحُهُ وجَمْعُهُ وضَمُّ ما انْتَشَرَ مِنْهُ

And hoarding wealth: is its improvement, gathering it, and collecting what has spread of it.

وَاحْتِجانُ مالِ غَيْرِكَ: اقْتِطاعُهُ وسِرْقَتُهُ

And appropriating the wealth of others: is cutting it off and stealing it.

وَكانَ يَقْعُدُ في جادَّةِ الطَّريقِ، فَيَأْخُذُ بِمِحْجَنِهِ الشَّيْءَ بَعْدَ الشَّيْءِ مِنْ أَثاثِ المارَّةِ

And he used to sit in the main road, and take with his hooked staff thing after thing from the belongings of passersby.

فَإِنْ فَطِنَ بهِ اعْتَلَّ وقالَ: إِنَّهُ اعْتَقَلَ بِمِحْجَنِهِ

If he noticed him, he would pretend to be ill and say: I got caught by my hooked staff.

وَالحُجْنَةُ: مَوْضِعٌ أَصابَهُ اعْوِجاجٌ مِنَ العَصا

And Al-Hujnah: a place that was affected by crookedness from the stick.

وَالحُجْنَةُ: ما اخْتَزَنْتَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ واختَصَصْتَ بِهِ نَفْسَكَ

And Al-Hujnah: what you have stored of something and kept exclusively for yourself.

وَاحْتَجَنَ عَلَيْهِ: حَجَرَ

And he hoarded against him: he restricted him.

وَالحُجْنُ: القُضْبانُ القِصارُ الَّتي فيها العِنَبُ، واحِدَتُها حُجْنَةٌ

And Al-Hujn: are the short branches that have grapes, their singular is Hujnah.
