And among it is the riddle-maker's saying about Uthman: 'What is the name of one with five? If you remove one, eight remains.'
فثبتت ياؤه عند الإضافة كما ثبتت ياء القاضي فتقول: ثماني نسوة وثماني مائة
So its yaa remains upon addition, just as the yaa of 'al-qadi' remains, so you say: 'thumani nisa' (eight women) and 'thumani mi'ah' (eight hundred).
وتسقط مع التنوين عند الرفع والجر، وتثبت عند النصب
And it drops with tanwin in the nominative and genitive cases, and it remains in the accusative.
يحدو ثماني مولعا بلقاحها حتى هممن بزيغه الإرتاج
He urges eight, fond of their conception, until they almost deviate from the enclosure.
