Al-Layth said: The burathins are the nails of the lion's claws.
وترى الضب حقيقا ماهرا رافعا برثنه ما ينعفر
And you see the lizard truly skillful, raising its paw so it doesn't touch the dirt.
يبسط براثنه ويثنيها في سباحته
It spreads its paws and folds them in its swimming.
ما ينعفر أي لا يصيب براثنه التراب.
Ma yancafiru means it does not touch the dirt with its paws.
وقد تستعار البراثن لأصابع الإنسان، كما قال ساعدة بن جؤية يذكر النحل ومشتار العسل:
And the burathins may be metaphorically used for human fingers, as Sa'idah bin Ju'ayyah said, mentioning bees and the honey collector:
ذو رجلة شثن البراثن حجنب
With rough fingers, the burathins are gnarled.
سئل عن مضر فقال: تميم برثمتها وجرثمتها.
He was asked about the tribe of Mudar and said: Tamim with its burthumah and jurthumah.
إنما هو برثنتها، بالنون، أي مخالبها، يريد شوكتها وقوتها، والميم والنون يتعاقبان، فيجوز أن تكون الميم لغة، ويجوز أن تكون بدلا لازدواج الكلام في الجرثومة.
It is actually burthunatihā, with a noon, meaning its claws, intending its might and power. The mim and noon are interchangeable; so it is permissible for the mim to be a dialectal variation, and permissible for it to be a substitution for the sake of rhyming with jurthumah.

لخطاب ليلى يال برثن منكم أدل وأمضى من سليك المقانب
To address Layla, O people of Barthin, you are more knowledgeable and sharper than Sulayk Al-Maqanib.
