A saddlebag with two sides, and they are like two panniers;

الأون: العدل والخرج يجعل فيه الزاد؛

The 'awn': the pannier and the bag in which provisions are placed;

ولا أقتفي بالأون دون رفيقي

And I do not follow with the saddlebag apart from my companion.

كأن بطن حبلى ذات أونين متئم

As if the belly of a pregnant woman with a slow-moving, heavy womb.

خرج ذو أونين: إذا احتشى جنباه بالمتاع.

A saddlebag with two sides: if its two flanks are filled with goods.

ورجل آين: رافه وادع؛

And a man is 'āyin': gentle and at ease;

وثلاث ليال أوائن: أي روافه.

And three nights 'awā'in': meaning, gentle (tranquil).

وعشر ليال آينات: أي وادعات

And ten nights 'āyināt': meaning, tranquil (at ease), the 'ya' before the 'noon'.

أكل وشرب حتى امتلأ بطنه وامتدت خاصرتاه فصار كالعدل؛

He ate and drank until his belly was full and his flanks extended, becoming like a pannier;

وسوس يدعو مخلصا رب الفلق سرا وقد أون تأوبن العقق

He whispered, calling sincerely the Lord of the dawn, secretly, and the she-camel was full, her flanks extended, like the pregnant one.

وصف أتنا وردت الماء فشربت حتى امتلأت خواصرها فصار الماء مثل الأونين إذا عدلا على الدابة،

Describing a she-camel that came to water and drank until her flanks were full, and the water became like the two panniers when they are balanced on the animal,

هذا أوان الجد إذ جد عمر

This is the time of seriousness when 'Umar became serious.

طلبوا صلحنا ولات أوان فأجبنا أن ليس حين بقاء

They sought our peace, and it was not the time, so we replied that there is no time for survival.

فلان يصنعه آونة و

So-and-so does it at times and

آينة؛ إذا كان يصنعه مرارا ويدعه مرارا

'āyinah; if he does it repeatedly and leaves it repeatedly

حمال أثقال أهل الود آونة أعطيهم الجهد مني يله ما أسعوفي

Carrying the burdens of the affectionate people at times, I give them my utmost effort, whatever I can manage.

مر برجل يحتلب شاة آونة، فقال: دع داعي اللبن

He passed by a man milking a sheep at intervals, and said: 'Leave the call for milk' (meaning, milk it again).

ولم يسمع لها بواحد

And no singular form was heard for it.

وبيتوا الأوان في الطيات

And they spent the night with the turtles in the dwellings.

ذو أوان: ع بالمدينة، على ساكنها أفضل الصلاة والسلام.

Dhu 'Awan: a place in Medina, upon its inhabitant be the best of prayers and peace.

وهو أعجمي وأنشد الجوهري: شطت نوى من أهله بالإيوان

And it is non-Arabic. Al-Jawhari narrated: 'Distance has estranged me from my people by the great hall'.

إيوان كسرى ذي القرى والريحان

The iwan of Khosrau, the possessor of villages and basil.

مثل ديوان ودواوين، لأن أصله إوان فأبدلت من إحدى الواوين ياء؛

Like 'diwan' and 'dawawin', because its origin is 'iwan' and one of the 'waws' was replaced by a 'ya';

كخوان وخون، كما في الصحاح.

Like 'khuwan' and 'khun', as in Al-Sihah.

قيل من أقيال ذي رعين من حمير.

It is said to be from the kings of Dhu Ray'in from Himyar.

ة ببغداد على عشرة فراسخ منها، بالقرب من مسكن.

A village in Baghdad, ten parasangs from it, near Maskin.

قرية نزهة ذات فواكه من قرى دجيل، وبها قبر مصعب بن الزبير أمير العراق؛

A pleasant village with fruits from the villages of Dujayl, and in it is the grave of Mus'ab ibn Al-Zubayr, the governor of Iraq;

ومنها يحيى بن الحسين مقرىء بغداد، وتلميذ أبي الكرم الشهرزوري، مات سنة 606؛

And from it is Yahya ibn Al-Husayn, the reciter of Baghdad, and a student of Abu Al-Karam Al-Shahrazuri, who died in 606 AH;

ويحيى بن عبد الله الأوانيان؛

And Yahya ibn Abdullah Al-Awaniyan;

ومنها أيضا: أبو الحسن مليح بن رقية عن عثمان بن أبي شيبة، ذكره الأمير؛

And also from it: Abu Al-Hasan Mulayh ibn Ruqayyah from Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah, mentioned by Al-Amir;

وأبو الحسن علي بن أحمد بن محمد الضرير كتب عنه أبو سعد السمعاني ببغداد، توفي بها سنة 537، رحمه الله تعالى، ذكره ابن الأثير.

And Abu Al-Hasan Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad Al-Darir, Abu Sa'd Al-Sam'ani wrote from him in Baghdad, he died there in 537 AH, may God have mercy on him, mentioned by Ibn Al-Athir.

وإنما غر المصنف أن ابن الأثير ذكر فيه أن المشهور بالموصل، وهذا لا يلزم منه أن تكون أوانى من قرى الموصل، فالصحيح أن أوانى هي قرية واحدة، وهي التي من أعمال بغداد.

What misled the author is that Ibn Al-Athir mentioned that it is famous in Mosul, and this does not necessitate that 'Awani' is from the villages of Mosul. The correct view is that 'Awani' is a single village, and it is the one in the province of Baghdad.

فهيهات ناس من أناس ديارهم دفاق ودار الآخرين أواين

Far away are people from people, their dwellings are flowing, and the dwelling of others is 'Awāyin'.

وهذا قد تقدم له في أول هذا الحرف فهو تكرار منه.

And this has been mentioned before at the beginning of this letter, so it is a repetition by him.

أون على قدرك: أي اتئد على نحوك.

'Awn 'ala qadrik': meaning, proceed at your pace (take it easy).

إذا استراح؛ عن ابن الأعرابي.

If he rested; from Ibn Al-Arabi.

أون في سيره: اقتصد؛ عن ابن السكيت.

'Awn in his journey: he was moderate; from Ibn Al-Sikkit.

وربع آئن خير من ربع حصحاص.

And a quarter of a resting place is better than a quarter of a barren land.

تأون في الأمر: تلبث.

To 'ta'awwana' in the matter: to delay.

الأون: الإعياء كالتعب.

Al-'awn: fatigue, like tiredness.

الأونان: الخاصرتان.

Al-'unān: the two flanks.

العدلان، كالأونين؛ قال الراعي:

The two panniers, like al-'unayn; Al-Rā'ī said:

تبيت ورجلاها أوانان لاستها عصاها استها حتى يكل قعودها

She spends the night, and her legs are like two panniers, her stick has beaten her until her sitting camel tires.

وقيل: الأوان: عمود من أعمدة الخباء.

And it is said: Al-'awān: a pillar from the pillars of the tent.

وقيل: الأوانان: اللجامان.

And it is said: Al-'awānān: the two reins.

وقيل: إناآن مملوآن على الرحل.

And it is said: two full containers on the saddle.

شرب حتى أون وحتى عدن وحتى كأنه طراف؛ كله بمعنى.

He drank until he was full, and until he was satiated, and until he was like a young camel; all meaning the same.

وأونت الأتان: أقربت.

And the she-donkey 'awwanat': she became pregnant.

الأون: التكلف للنفقة.

Al-'awn: the effort for expenditure.

والمؤنة عند أبي علي مفعلة من ذلك؛ وقيل: هي فعيلة من مأنت؛

And 'al-mu'nah' according to Abu Ali is derived from this; and it is said to be 'fa'ilah' from 'ma'anta';

وكل شيء عمدت به شيئا فهو إوان له بالكسر.

And anything by which you intended something is 'iwān' for it (with kasra).

والإوانة: ركية معروفة، عن الهجري، قال: هي بالعرف قرب وشحى والوركاء والدخول؛

And Al-Iwānah: a known well, from Al-Hajari. He said: it is known as Qurb, Shaha, Al-Warqā', and Al-Dukhūl;

فإن على الإوانة من عقيل فنى كلتا اليدين له يمين

For on Al-Iwānah from 'Aqil, both hands were lost to him, becoming right hands.
