Abu Zayd said: It is when he follows his track and does his deed.
((إنه ليوائم)) أي: يوافق، أو (باهاه)، عن أبي عبيد
((He agrees with him)) meaning: he conforms to him, or he boasts to him, according to Abu Ubayd.
لولا {الوئام لهلك) الإنسان، ويروى: لهلك (الأنام)، ويروى: لهلك اللئام
Were it not for accord, humanity would perish, and it is narrated: mankind would perish, and it is narrated: the base people would perish.
لولا موافقة الناس بعضهم بعضا في الصحبة، والعشرة لكانت الهلكة
Were it not for people agreeing with each other in companionship and social interaction, destruction would have occurred.
أن الإنسان، لولا نظره إلى غيره ممن يفعل الخير واقتداؤه به لهلك
That man, were it not for his looking to others who do good and his emulation of them, would perish.
وإنما يعيش الناس، بعضهم مع بعض؛ لأن الصغير، يقتدي بالكبير، والجاهل بالعالم
People live with each other only because the young emulate the old, and the ignorant emulate the learned.
أن اللئام (ليسوا يأتون بالجميل) من الأمور (خلقا) أي: على أنها أخلاقهم، (وإنما يأتونه) ، وفي بعض النسخ: يفعلونه، (مباهاة، وتشبها) بأهل الكرم
That the base people do not do good deeds by nature, meaning: as if they were their character; rather, they do them, and in some versions: they perform them, out of ostentation and imitation of the generous.
وهما توأمان، وهذا توأم هذا، وهذه توأمة هذه
And they are twins, and this is the twin of this, and this is the twinship of this.
وهو: الكناس، وأصل ذلك من الوئام، وهو: الموافقة، فالتاء بدل عن الواو
And it is: the lair. And the origin of that is from al-wi'am, which is: agreement, so the 'ta' is a substitute for the 'waw'.
وقد أتأمت المرأه) : إذا (ولدت) ، وفي الصحاح: وضعت (اثنين، في بطن، فهي متئم
And a woman has given birth to twins: if she has given birth to two in one womb, then she is muta'im.
فإذا كان ذلك عادتها فهي متآم
And if that is her habit, then she is muta'am.
غنى غناء متوائما: إذا كان متناسبا، وقيل: (لم تختلف ألحانه)
Singing a harmonious song: if it is proportionate, and it is said: its melodies did not differ.
المشوه الخلق) ، وهو أيضا، مقلوب عن المؤوم، كما تقدم، (وقد وأمه الله تعالى) توئيما: شوه خلقه
The deformed in creation, and it is also an inversion of al-mu'awwam, as mentioned before, and God Almighty deformed him, making him deformed in his creation.
قبيلة من الحبش) ، أو جنس منه، عن ابن الأعرابي، وأنشد، وقد شدد الشاعر ميمه ضرورة: وأنتم قبلة من يؤأم جاءت بكم سفينة من اليم
A tribe from Abyssinia, or a type of them, according to Ibn al-A'rabi. And he recited, and the poet stressed its 'mim' out of necessity: And you are a Qibla from Yu'am, a ship brought you from the sea.
الوأم: البيت الدفيء) ، وقال الميداني: الوأم: البيت الثخين من شعر، أو وبر، ومنه المثل: ((وأم بشق أهله جياع))
Al-wa'am: The warm dwelling. And Al-Maydani said: Al-wa'am is a thick dwelling made of hair or wool. And from it is the proverb: ((A dwelling in Shaq, its people are hungry)).
وشق: موضع، يضرب للكثير المال، لا ينتفع به
And Shaq is a place, used to describe someone with much wealth who does not benefit from it.
ورجل وأمة، محركة: يعمل، ويحكي ما يصنع غيره
And a man 'wa'amah', with harakah: he works and imitates what others do.
الموأمة) ، كمعظمة: (البيضة التي لا قونس لها) سميت لتشويه خلقتها
Al-mu'amah, like 'mu'adhdhamah': The egg that has no yolk, it is named so due to its deformed creation.
ووهم الجوهري في ذكر التوأم، في فصل التاء) ، أي: بناء على ما اختاره أبو حيان وغيره من أهل اللغة والنحو
And Al-Jawhari was mistaken in mentioning 'al-taw'am' in the 'ta' section, meaning: based on what Abu Hayyan and others from the linguists and grammarians chose.
فإنه جزم في الممتع أن تاء التوأم: أصلية؛ لأنهم تصرفوا فيها، جمعا وغيره، دون مراجعة هذا الأصل
For he asserted in 'Al-Mumti'' that the 'ta' of 'al-taw'am' is original; because they manipulated it, in plural and otherwise, without referring back to this origin.
ولو كان أصلها واوا لنطقوا به يوما من الدهر، فلا وهم، قاله شيخنا، على أن الجوهري ذكره هناك، مع بيانه، نقلا عن الخليل أن تقديره فوعل، وأصله: ووأم، فأبدل من إحدى الواوين تاء
And if its origin were 'waw', they would have pronounced it at some point in time, so there is no mistake, said our sheikh. Although Al-Jawhari mentioned it there, with his explanation, quoting from Al-Khalil that its pattern is 'faw'al', and its origin is 'waw'am', so one of the 'waws' was replaced by a 'ta'.
والمصنف تبعه هناك من غير تنبيه عليه، وهو غريب، وذكره الأزهري في المحلين
And the author followed him there without drawing attention to it, which is strange. And Al-Azhari mentioned it in the two 'muhallin'.
وأمه وأما، من حد منع: وافقه، عن ابن الأعرابي
And 'ammahu' 'amman', from the pattern 'mana'a': he agreed with him, according to Ibn al-A'rabi.
ويقال: فلانة توائم صواحباتها: إذا تكلفت ما يتكلفن من الزينة [وغيرها]
And it is said: So-and-so 'tawaim' her companions: if she affects what they affect of adornment [and other things].
يتواءمن بنومات الضحى ... حسنات الدل والأنس الخفر
They affect airs with the naps of the forenoon... possessing grace and shy familiarity.
وحكى حمزة، عن يعقوب، أنه يقال للعبد: ابن يوأم، وأنشد
And Hamza narrated, from Ya'qub, that it is said of the slave: son of Yu'am, and he recited.
وإن الذي كلفتني أن أرده ... مع ابن عباد أو بأرض ابن يوأما
And indeed, what you tasked me with returning... with Ibn Abbad or in the land of Ibn Yu'am.
على كل نأي المحزمين ترى له ... شراسيف تغتال الوضين المسمما
At every distant point of the girded ones, you see for him... bones that steal the marked saddle.
والتوأم: الثاني من سهام الميسر، وقد تقدم
And 'al-taw'am': the second of the arrows of MAYSIR, and it has been mentioned before.
وفرس متائم: للذي يأتي بجري بعد جري، وقد تقدم أيضا
And a horse 'muta'im': for one that comes with a run after a run, and it has also been mentioned before.
