We decided on changing the 'ya' of 'naym' to 'waw' in all its forms because of the existence of (N-W-M) and the absence of (N-Y-M).

And 'al-naym': a tree with soft thorns, small leaves, and many scattered seeds like chickpeas, which are sour; when ripe, they turn black and sweet, and are eaten. Its habitat is the mountains.

ثم ينوش إذا آد النهار له ... بعد الترقب من! نيم ومن كتم

Then it reaches out when the day grows long for it... after waiting from the 'naym' tree and the 'katm' tree.

وقيل: هما شجرتان، من العضاه.

And it was said: they are two trees, from the thorny trees.

وكل لين، من عيش، أو ثوب) : نيم.

And every softness, in life or in clothing: 'naym'.

والنيم أيضا: (الدرج) التي تكون (في الرمال، إذا جرت عليها الريح)

And 'al-naym' also: (the undulations) that are (in the sand, when the wind blows over them).

حتى انجلى الليل عنا في ملمعة ... مثل الأديم، لها من هبوة نيم

Until the night cleared from us in a shining expanse... like leather, it had from the dust drifts 'naym'.

قال ابن بري: وفسر النيم هنا بالفرو.

Ibn Barrī said: 'Al-naym' here was interpreted as fur.

والنيم: (الفرو) ، زاد الجوهري (الخلق).

And 'al-naym': (the fur), al-Jawharī added (the natural fur).

وقيل: هو الفرو القصير، إلى الصدر، أي: نصف فرو، بالفارسية، وقيل: فرو يسوى من جلود الأرانب، وهو غالي الثمن

And it was said: it is short fur, reaching the chest, meaning: half a fur coat, in Persian. And it was said: fur made from rabbit skins, and it is expensive.

في ليلة من ليالي القر شاتية لايدفئ الشيخ من صرادها النيم

On one of the cold winter nights, the 'naym' (fur) does not warm the old man from its biting cold.

وقد أرى ذاك فلن يدوما يكسين من لين الشباب نيما

And I may see that, but it will not last; they clothe me with the softness of youth, 'naym' (gentleness/softness).

And 'Minaymun': a district in Egypt.

والنيم، بالكسر: القطيفة، وقد ذكره في ((ن وم)) . وأغفله هنا، وهو غريب.

And 'al-naym', with kasra: the velvet cloth, and he mentioned it under (N-W-M). He omitted it here, which is strange.

والنيم: الضجيع، ويقولون: هو نيم المرأة، وهي: نيمته، نقله ابن سيده.

And 'al-naym': the bedfellow. And they say: he is the woman's 'naym' (bedfellow), and she is: his 'naymatuhu' (bedfellow), as narrated by Ibn Sīdah.
