عندي قطرة لبن، ثم يلطم خده ويرسله

I have a drop of milk, then he strikes its cheek and sends it away.

إذا طلع سهيل برد الليل وامتنع القيل؛ وللفيصيل الويل؛ وذلك لأنه يفصل عند طلوعه

When Suhail rises, the night cools and the midday nap is foregone; and woe to the young camel; for it is separated at its rising.

A latmiyyah pearl, attributed to the latā'im, which are the markets where perfumes are sold.

فجاء بها ما شئت من لطمية ... يدوم الفرات فوقها ويموج

And it brought you what you wished of latmiyyah... the Euphrates flows over it and surges.

وكل شيء خلطته بشيء فقد لطمته

And everything you mixed with something, you have latm-ed it.

ولطمتني من رائحة، إذا وجدتها منه

And a scent struck me, if you found it from him.

وتلاطمت الأمواج مثل التطمت

And the waves struck each other like they struck.

تظل جيادنا متمطرات ... يلطمهن بالخمر النساء

Our fine horses remain stretched out... women strike them with their veils.

أي: ينفضن ما عليها من الغبار، فاستعار له اللطم

Meaning: they shake off the dust from them, so he borrowed the term 'latm' for it.

ويروى: يطلمهن وهو الضرب بالكف

And it is narrated: 'yatlumuhunna,' which is striking with the palm.
