وقيل - بالقاف -: كسر الشيء من طوله، وبالفاء: قطع الشيء المستدير
And it is said - with Qaf: breaking something lengthwise, and with Fa: cutting something round.
فانقصم وتقصم كلاهما مطاوع قصمه
And 'inqasama' and 'taqassama' both are the passive forms of 'qasama' (to be broken).
قصم فلان راجعا: رجع من حيث جاء ولم يتم إلى حيث قصد
So-and-so turned back: he returned from where he came, without completing his intended destination.
وهو أقصم الثنية: منكسرها من النصف فهو بين القصم، محركة
And he is 'aqsam al-thaniyah': its middle part is broken, so it is between the breaks (qasm), with vowelization.

And it is said: 'If you asked me for a broken piece of a toothbrush, I would not give it to you', meaning: its splinter, which is the fragment remaining in the mouth when brushing, which is then spat out.
والقصمة، بالفتح: المرقاة للدرجة، مثل القصفة
And 'al-qasmah', with Fath: the step or ladder, like 'al-qasfah'.
ومننه الحديث: " وما ترتفع في السماء من قصمة - يعني الشمس - إلا فتح لها باب من النار "
And from it is the Hadith: 'And no step (qasmah - meaning the sun) rises in the sky except that a door of Hell is opened for it'.
ورجل قصم كما في الصحاح، وفي المحكم: رجل قصم: أي: ضاو ضعيف سريع الانكسار

And in Al-Muhkam: 'Al-Qaisum': what grows tall from grass, and 'Al-Qaisum': from the plants of the plain, and from the male and bitter types, and it is fragrant among the wildflowers of the desert.
وورقه هدب له نورة صفراء، وهي تنهض على ساق وتطول
And its leaves are fringed with a yellow bloom, which rises on a stem and grows tall.
وأنشد الجوهري: بلاد بها القيصوم والشيح والغضى
And Al-Jauhari recited: 'Lands where Qaisum, Shih, and Ghada grow'.
يقال للظالم: قصم الله ظهره أي: أنزل به بلية
It is said to the oppressor: 'May God break his back', meaning: may God inflict a calamity upon him.
ونزلت به قاصمة الظهر
And a back-breaking calamity befell him.
والقصيمة: ما سهل من الأرض وكثر شجره
And 'al-qusaymah': what is easy land and has abundant trees.
وفلان يمضغ الشيح والقيصوم؛ لمن خلصت بدويته
And so-and-so chews Shih and Qaisum; for one whose Bedouin life is pure.
وسيف قصم، ككتف، وفيه قصم، محركة: تكسر في حده
And a 'qasim' sword, like 'katif', and it has 'qasm', with harakah: its edge breaks.
