والوثن: ما كان على غيرها.
And the wathan: is that which is of other than that.
وقال آخرون: ما كان له جسم أو صورة فصنم، فإن لم يكن له جسم أو صورة فهو وثن.
And others said: That which has a body or form is a ṣanam, and if it has no body or form, it is a wathan.
وقد يطلق الوثن على الصليب، وعلى كل ما يشغل عن الله تعالى.
And the wathan may be applied to the cross, and to everything that distracts from God Almighty.
وعلى هذا الوجه قال إبراهيم عليه السلام: {واجنبني وبني أن نعبد الأصنام} ؛
And in this sense, Abraham, peace be upon him, said: {And keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols};
