He said: And ar-ratm: the main road.
قال: والرتم: الكلام الخفي
He said: And ar-ratm: hidden speech.
قال: والرتم: الحياء التام
He said: And ar-ratm: complete shyness.
وكان من أراد منهم سفرا يعمد إلى شجرة فيعقد غصنين منها
And whoever among them intended a journey would go to a tree and tie two branches of it.
فإن رجع وكانا على حالهما قال: إن أهله لم تخنه وإلا فقد خانته، وذلك الرتم والرتيمة
If he returned and they were in their original state, he would say: His wife has not betrayed him, otherwise she has betrayed him, and that is ar-ratm and ar-ratimah.
ورتم في بني فلان أي: نشأ
And 'ratama in the family of so-and-so, meaning: he grew up.
ورتم: أخذه غشي من أكل الرتم للنبات المذكور.
And 'ratama: he was overcome by dizziness from eating ar-ratm, the aforementioned plant.
وهم رتامى، كسكارى
And they are ratāmā, like sukārā.
ورتمت المعزى إذا رعته
And the goats 'ratamat if they grazed on it.
والرتماء: الناقة التي تأكله وتألفه وتكلف به
And ar-ratmā': the she-camel that eats it, is fond of it, and craves it.
والرتماء: التي تحمل الرتم، وهي المزادة المملوءة
And ar-ratmā': she who carries ar-ratm, which is the filled waterskin.
ألستم تغضبون إذا رأيتم ... يميني وعثة وفمي رتاما
Are you not angered when you see... my right hand broken and my mouth shattered?
وما رتم فلان بكلمة أي: ما تكلم بها
And so-and-so did not 'ratama with a word, meaning: he did not speak it.
وما زال راتما على هذا الأمر أي: مقيما
And he continued to 'ratima on this matter, meaning: remaining steadfast.
وأرتم الفصيل: أجذى في سنامه
And the camel calf 'artama: it developed a hump on its back.
وشر ترتم، كقنفذ، وحندب: دائم أو ثابت مقيم.
And sharru tartam, like qunfudh and hundab: constant or steadfastly remaining.
