الحلم، بالضم وبضمتين: الرؤيا
Al-hulm, with damma and two dammas: the vision.
هو ما يراه النائم.
It is what the sleeper sees.
فهما مترادفان، وعليه مشى أكثر أهل اللغة، وفرق بينهما الشارع فخص الرؤيا بالخير وخص الحلم بضده، ويؤيده حديث: ((الرؤيا من الله والحلم من الشيطان))
They are synonyms, and most linguists followed this view. The Lawgiver distinguished between them, assigning visions to good and dreams to their opposite, supported by the hadith: 'A vision is from God, and a dream is from Satan.'
وقد يستعمل كل منهما في موضع الآخر
And each of them may be used in the place of the other.
حلم في نومه يحلم حلما واحتلم، وتحلم، وانحلم
He dreamed in his sleep, he dreams a dream, he had a wet dream, he pretended to be forbearing, and he dreamed.
وتحلم الحلم أي: استعمله.
And 'he used the dream' means: he employed it.
حلمت بكذا وحلمته أيضا
I dreamed of such-and-such, and I also dreamed it.
فحلمتها وبنو رفيدة دونها ... لا يبعدن خيالها المحلوم
I dreamed her, and the sons of Rufaydah were between her and me... May her dreamed image not be far away.
والحلم، بالضم والاحتلام: الجماع في النوم، والاسم الحلم، كعنق
And al-hulm, with damma, and al-ihtilam: intercourse in sleep, and the noun is hulm, like 'unuq.
لم يبلغوا الحلم
They have not reached puberty.
أمر معاذا أن يأخذ من كل حالم دينارا
He ordered Mu'adh to take a dinar from every person who has reached puberty.
يعني: الجزية، قال أبو الهيثم: أراد بالحالم كل من بلغ الحلم وجرى عليه حكم الرجال، حلم أو لم يحتلم
Meaning: the jizya. Abu Al-Haytham said: By 'one who has reached puberty' he meant everyone who has reached the age of puberty and is subject to the rulings of men, whether they have had a wet dream or not.
الغسل يوم الجمعة واجب على كل حالم
Washing on Friday is obligatory for every person who has reached puberty.
إنما هو على من بلغ الحلم، أي: بلغ أن يحتلم أو احتلم قبل ذلك
It is only upon one who has reached puberty, meaning: reached the age of having a wet dream or had one before that.
أجمع العلماء أن الاحتلام يحصل به البلوغ في حق الرجل
The scholars have unanimously agreed that puberty is achieved by a male through a wet dream.
وإذا بلغ الأطفل منكم الحلم فليستئذنوا
And when children among you reach puberty, let them ask permission.
وعن الصبي حتى يحتلم
And from the boy until he reaches puberty.
المراد بالاحتلام خروج المني سواء كان في اليقظة أم في المنام بحلم أو غير حلم.
What is meant by ihtilam is the emission of semen, whether awake or asleep, with or without a dream.
والحلم، بالكسر: الأناة والعقل
And al-hilm, with kasra: forbearance and intellect.
وقيل: ضبط النفس والطبع عن هيجان الغضب
And it was said: controlling oneself and disposition from the surge of anger.
أم تأمرهم أحلمهم بهذا
Or do their intellects command them this?
ليليني منكم أولو الأحلام والنهى
Let those of intellect and reason be next to me among you.
وهو حليم كأمير، ومنه قوله تعالى: {إنك لأنت الحليم الرشيد}
And he is halim, like amir, and from this is His saying: 'Indeed, you are the forbearing, the guided.'
مجرب الحزم في الأمور وإن ... خفت حلوم بأهلها حلما
Experienced in resolving matters, even if... forbearance was scarce among its people.
تحلم عن الأدنين واستبق ودهم ... ولن تستطيع الحلم حتى تحلما
Be forbearing towards the lowly and preserve their affection... And you will not be able to be forbearing until you exert yourself.
تحلم المال: سمن
The money became fat: it grew plump.
لحونهم لحو العصا فطردنهم ... إلى سنة جرذانها لم تحلم
Their tunes were like sticks, so they drove them away... to a year when its rats had not fattened.
وردوا صدور الخيل حتى تنهنهت ... إلى ذي النهى واستيدهوا للمحلم
They turned the chests of the horses until they were checked... towards the one of intellect, and they were made to obey the one who commands forbearance.
أمر بالحلم
He commanded forbearance.
إذا ولدت الحلماء
When she gives birth to mature offspring.
إن العصا قرعت لذي الحلم ...
Indeed, the staff was struck for the one of intellect...
والحلمة، محركة: الثؤلول في وسط الثدي
And al-hulmah, with harakah: the wart in the middle of the breast.
الحلمة رأس الثدي، وهما حلمتان.
The hulmah is the tip of the breast, and there are two hulmah.
الحلمة دون الذراع، لها ورقة غليظة وأفنان وزهرة كزهرة شقائق النعمان إلا أنها أكبر وأغلظ.
The hulmah is less than a cubit, it has a thick leaf, branches, and a flower like the anemone flower, except it is larger and thicker.
السعدان بقل له شوك مستدير، والحلمة لا شوك لها، وهي من الجنبة معروفة وقد رأيتها.
Al-sa'dan is a herb with round thorns, and al-hulmah has no thorns, and it is a known shrub, and I have seen it.
هي الحلمة والينمة، ونقل غيره عن الأصمعي أنها نبت من العشب فيه غبرة له مس أخشن، أحمر الثمرة.
It is al-hulmah and al-yannamah, and others reported from Al-Asma'i that it is a type of grass with a dusty appearance, a rough touch, and a red fruit.
ينبت بنجد في الرمل في جعيثنة لها زهر وورقها أخيشن، عليه شوك كأنه أظافير الإنسان، تطنى الإبل وتزل أحناكها إذا رعته من العيدان اليابسة.
It grows in Najd in the sand in a clump that has flowers, and its leaves are rough, with thorns like human fingernails; camels chew it and their jaws become loose if they graze on it among dry twigs.
القراد العظيم، وهو مثل العل، ضد
The large tick, which is like the 'all, its opposite.
أنه كان ينهى أن تنزع الحلمة عن دابته
That he used to forbid removing the tick from his mount.
القراد أول ما يكون صغيرا قمقامة، ثم يصير حمنانة، ثم يصير قرادا، ثم حلمة.
The tick, when it first appears, is small and called qum'amah, then it becomes hammanah, then it becomes qirad, then hulmah.
كثر حلمه، فهو حلم ككتف
Its mucus increased, so it is hulim, like kutuf.
بعير حلم: قد أفسده الحلم من كثرته عليه
A camel is hulim: it has been spoiled by the abundance of its mucus on it.
وعناق حلمة، كفرحة، وتحلمة من تحالم قد أفسد جلدها الحلم، والجمع الحلام.
And a young female goat hulmah, like farhah, and a young female camel tahallumah from tahalum whose skin has been spoiled by hulm, and the plural is hulām.
دودة تقع في جلد الشاة الأعلى وجلدها الأسفل
A worm that falls on the upper and lower skin of a sheep.
دودة تقع في الجلد فتأكله، فإذا دبغ وهى موضع الأكل وبقي رقيقا
A worm that falls on the skin and eats it, so when it is tanned, that spot remains thin.
وقع فيه الحلم وهي الدودة المذكورة فنقبته وأفسدته فلا ينتفع به.
Al-hulm, which is the mentioned worm, fell into it, perforated it, and spoiled it, so it cannot be used.
كتاب إلى علي ... كدابغة وقد حلم الأديم
A letter to Ali... like a tanner, and the leather has been affected by hulm.
وحلمت الإبل: أخذت عنها الحلم.
And 'I removed the hulm from the camels': I took the hulm from them.
الجدي يؤخذ من بطن أمه، كما في الصحاح.
The kid is taken from its mother's womb, as in Al-Sihah.
هو الجدي والحمل الصغير يعني الخروف
It is the kid and the small lamb, meaning the sheep.
سمي الجدي حلاما لملازمته الحلمة يرضعها
The kid is named hulām because it stays close to the nipple, suckling it.
الحلام والحلان بالميم والنون: صغار الغنم.
Al-hulām and al-hulān, with mim and nun: young sheep.
ما بقرت عنه بطن أمه فوجدته قد حمم وشعر، فإن لم يكن كذلك فهو غضين، وقد أغضنت الناقة: إذا فعلت ذلك.
What was cut from its mother's womb and found to have hair and be developed; if not, it is ghudain, and the she-camel has 'aghdanat' if she does that.
كل قتيل في كليب حلام ... حتى ينال القتل آل همام
Every person killed in [the matter of] Kulayb is hulām... until the family of Hammām achieves vengeance.
ضرب من الأقط
A type of dried milk product.
أو لبن يغلظ فيصير شبيها بالجبن الطري
Or milk that thickens and becomes like soft cheese.
بالجبن الرطب وليس به.
Like moist cheese, but not it.
الشحم المقبل
The accumulating fat.
فإن قضاء المحل أهون ضيعة ... من المخ في أنقاء كل حليم
For the loss of the place is easier... than the marrow in the bones of every fat animal.
البعير المقبل السمن
The camel that is accumulating fat.

Halim ibn Waddah the jurist, a teacher of Abu Sa'd Al-Idrisi.

Al-Husayn ibn Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Halim Al-Halimi, the Shafi'i jurist, the author of many works.
