The measure of 'taw'am' is Faw'al, and its origin is 'waw'am', so one of the waw's was replaced by a ta'.
وذهب بعض أهل اللغة إلى أن توأم فوعل من الوئام وهو الموافقة والمشاكلة
And some linguists went to the opinion that 'taw'am' is Faw'al from 'wi'am', which means agreement and similarity.
فالتوأم على هذا أصله ووأم وهو الذي واءم غيره، أي: وافقه فقلبت الواو الأولى تاء
So 'taw'am' in this case originates from 'waw'am', which is that which agrees with another, meaning: it matches it, so the first waw was turned into a ta'.
فالتوأم ووأم في الأصل، وكذلك التولج أصله وولج
So 'taw'am' and 'waw'am' are the origin, and likewise 'tulaj' originates from 'wulaj'.
وأصل ذلك من الوئام وهو الوفاق
And the origin of that is from 'wi'am', which is accord.
ج: توائم، مثل قشعم وقشاعم
Plural: tawā'im, like qash'am and qashā'im.
وتؤام، كرخال على ما فسر في عراق
And tu'ām, like rukhāl, as explained in 'Irāq.

And this is not impossible for waw and nun in humans, just as its feminine is pluralized with ta'.

And it is said: 'taw'am' for the male, and 'taw'amah' for the female, and when they are dual, they are 'taw'amān'.

And 'al-taw'am': two children together, and it is not said: they are 'taw'amān', but rather it is said: this is the twin of this, and this is her twin, and when they are dual, they are 'taw'am'.
أخطأ الليث فيما قال، والقول ما قال ابن السكيت وهو قول الفراء والنحويين الذين يوثق بعلمهم
Al-Layth erred in what he said, and the correct view is what Ibn al-Sikkit said, which is the opinion of al-Farra' and the grammarians whose knowledge is trusted.
قالوا: يقال للواحد توأم وهما توأمان إذا ولدا في بطن واحد
They said: it is said for one 'taw'am', and they are 'taw'amān' if they were born in one womb.
وقد أتأمت الأم فهي متئم: إذا ولدت اثنين في بطن واحد
And the mother has given birth to twins, so she is a mother of twins: if she gave birth to two in one womb.
ومعتادته متآم، كمحراب
And its usual place is 'matā'am', like 'miḥrāb'.

He did not record it like this, but rather it is understood from its context, for after he mentioned 'al-taw'am' which is the second lot of maysir and mentioned its measure from Al-Khalil, he said: And 'taw'am' also: the capital of Oman along the coast, to which pearls are attributed.
فإنه هكذا هو مضبوط كغرابية، ورواه بعضهم كالتوأمية على وزن جوهرية
For it is recorded like this, as 'tu'āmiyyah' like 'ghurābiyyah', and some narrated it as 'al-taw'amiyyah' on the measure of 'jawhariyyah'.
والتوأمان: عشبة صغيرة لها ثمرة مثل الكمون، كثيرة الورق، تنبت في القيعان، مسلنطحة، ولها زهرة صفراء
And 'al-taw'amān': a small herb with a fruit like cumin, many leaves, growing in lowlands, spreading, and having a yellow flower.
والتئمة، بالكسر: الشاة تكون للمرأة تحلبها
And 'ti'mah', with kasr: the ewe that a woman has for milking.
وأتأم: ذبحها، ظاهره أنه كأكرم، وليس كذلك بل هو بالتشديد كافتعل
And 'at'ama': to slaughter it, its apparent form is like 'akrama', but it is not so, rather it is with tashdid like 'ift'ala'.
والتوأمة بنت أمية بن خلف بن وهب بن حذافة بن جمح الجمحية، كانت هي وأخت لها في بطن واحد
And 'al-taw'amah bint Umayyah ibn Khalaf ibn Wahb ibn Hudhafah ibn Qays ibn Jumaḥ al-Jumḥiyyah, she and her sister were in one womb.
وصالح بن أبي صالح مولاها واسم أبي صالح نبهان، روى عن عائشة وأبي هريرة، وعنه السفيانان
And Salih ibn Abi Salih, her freedman, and the name of Abi Salih is Nabhan, he narrated from Aisha and Abu Hurayrah, and Al-Sufyanayn narrated from him.
والتوأمات من مراكب النساء، كالمشاجر
And 'al-taw'amāt' are from the conveyances of women, like 'al-mashājir'.
