In Al-Sihah: 'Al-ayami': those who have no spouses among men and women, and their origin is 'ayayim' which was inverted because the singular is 'ayyim', whether he was married before or not, and a woman is also 'ayyim', whether she was a virgin or previously married.
وقول النبي - صلى الله تعالى عليه وسلم -: " الأيم أحق بنفسها " فهذه الثيب لا غير
And the Prophet's saying - may God Almighty bless him and grant him peace -: 'The 'ayyim' has more right over herself' - this refers to a previously married woman and no other.
وقد} آمت) المرأة من زوجها ( {تئيم} أيما {وأيوما) ، بالضم (} وأيمة {وإيمة) ، بالفتح والكسر: إذا مات عنها زوجها أو قتل وأقامت لا تتزوج
And the woman 'aamat' from her husband 'ta'im', 'ayman' and 'ayuman' (with damma), and 'ayimah' and 'imah' (with fatha and kasra): if her husband died or was killed and she remained without marrying.
وفي الحديث: أنه " كان يتعوذ من} الإيمة " وهي طول العزبة
And in the hadith: that he 'used to seek refuge from 'al-imah', which is a long period of being unmarried.

As if the step from its reins' place... is the journey of 'al-ayum' if its hoof does not spare it.

And 'al-ammah' (with madd): the flaw.
في ذلك {آمة علينا، أي نقص وغضاضة.
In that is 'ammah' upon us, meaning deficiency and disgrace.

'Al-Iyam': a stick on which fire is placed, then it is used to smoke the bees.
وإيام، الياء فيه منقلبة عن الواو

And 'al-ammah' with madd: the bachelors, plural of 'aam', meaning 'ayyim' which was inverted.
أمهرن أرماحا وهن {بآمة ... أعجلنهن مظنة الإعذار)
They presented their spears, and they were in 'bi'ammah'... they hastened them, suspecting an excuse.
وقولهم:} أيم هو يا فلان [أصله] أي ما هو، أي: أي شيء هو، فخفف " الياء " وحذف ألف " ما ".
And their saying: 'Ayyim huwa ya fulan' [its origin is] 'ay ma huwa', meaning: 'what is it?', so the 'ya' was lightened and the alif of 'ma' was deleted.
وقولهم: أيم تقول؟ يعني: أي شيء تقول؟ .
And their saying: 'Ayyim taqul?' means: 'What are you saying?'.
