قال ابن بري: المشآة: الزبيل الذي يخرج به التراب من البئر.

Ibn al-Bari said: Al-mish'ah: the basket with which earth is removed from the well.

وهوذل السقاء إذا تمخض أي: أخرج زبدته وهو من ذلك.

And the waterskin was churned when it produced its froth, meaning: it expelled its froth, and it is from this.

وهوذل الرجل: ضعف في الجماع.

And the man was weak in intercourse.

وهوذل البعير ببوله: إذا نزاه ورمى به، قال: (لو لم يهوذل طرفاه لنجم ... في صدره مثل قفا الكبش الأجم ... )

And the camel urinated forcefully: when it expelled it and threw it, he said: (If its two ends had not forcefully expelled... in its chest like the rump of a hornless ram...)

وهذيل، كزبير: صحابي، وكان أبواه مقعدين فمات في أيام النبي - صلى الله تعالى عليه وسلم - في المدينة، إن صح.

And Hudhayl, like Zubayr: a companion, and his parents were paralyzed, so he died during the days of the Prophet - may God's blessings and peace be upon him - in Medina, if it is authentic.

And hudhil: if he passed feces and excrement.

وذهب بوله هذاليل: إذا انقطع.

And his urine went in streams: if it stopped.

وأهذل في مشيه وأهذب: أسرع، عن ابن الفرج، ويقال: جاء مهذبا مهذلا.

And he hastened in his walk and he hurried: he moved fast, from Ibn al-Faraj, and it is said: he came fast and swift.

والهوذل: ولد القرد، عن ابن بري، وأنشد: (يدير النهار بحشر له ... كما دار بالمنة الهوذل)

And al-hudhil: the young of the monkey, from Ibn al-Bari, and he recited: (He turns the day with his play... as the young monkey turns with the female monkey).

المنة: القردة، والهوذل: ابنها، والنهار: فرخ الحبارى.

Al-minnah: the female monkey, and al-hudhil: her young, and al-nahar: the chick of the bustard.

And Ibn Shumayl said: Al-hadhlul: the low-lying place in the desert that a person does not notice until they overlook it, and its depth is about a cubit, it leads for a night or a day, its width is a spear's length and more, it has a slope but no edges.

وقال غيره: الهذلول: ما سفت الريح من أعالي الأنقاء إلى أسافلها، وهو مثل الخندق في الأرض.

And others said: Al-hadhlul: what the wind has blown from the tops of the dunes to their bottoms, and it is like a trench in the ground.

وذهب ثوبه هذاليل، أي: قطعا.

And his garment went to pieces, i.e., in shreds.

وأنشد ابن الأعرابي: (قلت لقوم خرجوا هذاليل ... (نوكى ولا يقطع النوكى القيل ... )

And Ibn al-A'rabi recited: (I said to a group who went out scattered... (Fools, and folly does not cut off speech...))

فسره فقال: الهذاليل: المتقطعون، وقيل: هم المسرعون يتبع بعضهم بعضا.

He explained it and said: Al-hadhalil: the separated ones, and it was said: they are the swift ones following each other.

والهذلول: سيف مهلهل، وفيه يقول: (لا وقع إلا مثل وقع الهذلول ... (بواردات يوم عوف محلول ... )

And al-hadhlul: the sword of Muhalhil, and about it he says: (No impact except like the impact of al-hadhlul... (with the onslaughts of the day of 'Awf, resolved...))

والهذلول: العرمة من الكدس.
