Maintaining kinship ties, which is commanded, is an allusion to being kind to close relatives by lineage and marriage, showing compassion and gentleness towards them, and caring for their affairs even if they are distant or have wronged you; severing kinship ties is the opposite of all that.

And 'to connect' (waṣala) with 'intensified connection' (tawṣīlan) means more than just 'connection' (waṣl); for example, a rope that is 'connected' (muwaṣṣil) has many 'connections' (wuṣal).

وواصل الصيام مواصلة ووصالا: إذا لم يفطر أياما تباعا، وقد نهي عنه

And 'to fast continuously' (wāṣala) with 'continuous fasting' (muwāṣalah) and 'fasting' (wiṣāl) means if one does not break their fast for consecutive days, and it has been forbidden.

إن امرأ واصل في الصلاة خرج منها صفرا

Indeed, a man who 'continued' (wāṣala) in prayer emerged from it empty-handed.

كنا ما ندري المواصلة في الصلاة حتى قدم علينا الشافعي

We did not know what 'continuous practice' (al-muwāṣalah) in prayer was until Al-Shafi'i came to us.

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله فيصلها بالتسليمة الثانية، الأولى فرض والثانية سنة فلا يجمع بينهما

Saying 'Peace be upon you, and the mercy of God,' and then 'connecting' (fa-yaṣiluhā) it with the second salutation; the first is obligatory, and the second is a sunnah, so they should not be combined.

وتوصل، أي: توسل وتقرب.

And 'to seek proximity' (tatawaṣṣala), meaning: to seek nearness and draw close.

والتواصل: ضد التصارم.

And 'communication' (al-tawāṣul) is the opposite of 'estrangement' (al-taṣārum).

وأعطاه وصلا من ذهب، أي: صلة وهبة كأنه ما يتصل به أو يتوصل في معاشه.

And he gave him 'a portion' (waṣlan) of gold, meaning: a gift and a grant, as if it were something that connects him or helps him in his livelihood.

And 'joining' (al-waṣl) is the mending of a garment or a shoe, and it is said: 'This is a 'match' (wiṣl) for this,' meaning: it is like it.

ويقال للرجلين يذكران بفعال وقد مات أحدهما: فعل كذا، ولا يوصل حي بميت.

And when two men are mentioned for their deeds, one of whom has died, it is said: 'He did such and such,' and 'a living person is not 'connected' (yuwaṣṣal) to a dead one.'

وليس له بوصيل، أي: لا يتبعه

And he is not 'a follower' (bi-waṣīl) to him, meaning: he does not follow him.

والموصل، كمجلس: الموت، قال المتنخل: (ليس لميت بوصيل وقد علق فيه طرف الموصل) أي: طرف من الموت، أي: سيموت ويتصل به.

And 'death' (al-mawṣil), like 'a place of sitting' (majlis), is death. Al-Mutanakhkhil said: (He is not 'a follower' (bi-waṣīl) to a dead person, and the 'connector' (al-mawṣil) has attached a part to him) meaning: a part of death, meaning: he will die and be connected to it.

And 'the joint' (al-mawṣil) is the articulation, and 'the camel's hip joint area' (mawṣil al-ba'īr) is the area between the rump and the thigh.

والوصلان: العجز والفخذ، وقيل: طبق الظهر.

And 'the hip and thigh' (al-wuṣlān) are the rump and the thigh, and it is said: the flat part of the back.

ويقال: هذا رجل وصيل هذا، أي: مثله.

And it is said: 'This man is a 'match' (waṣīl) for this one,' meaning: like him.

And 'a connecting pasture' (al-waṣīlah) is land with herbage that connects to other land with herbage. From it is the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud: 'If you are in 'a connecting pasture' (al-waṣīlah), give your mount its due.'

ويقال: قطعنا وصلة بعيدة، بالضم، أي: أرضا بعيدة.

And it is said: 'We crossed 'a distant land' (wiṣlah ba'īdah), with damma, meaning: a distant land.'

وساق الله إلي وصلة حتى بلغت مقصدي، أي: رفقة حملوني.

And God brought to me 'a company of travelers' (wiṣlah) until I reached my destination, meaning: a group that carried me.

ويسمون الزاد وصلة، بالضم، قاله الزمخشري.

And they call provisions 'provisions' (wiṣlah), with damma, said Al-Zamakhshari.

والصلة: كالوصل الذي هو الحرف بعد الروي.

And 'the rhyme-letter' (al-ṣilah) is like 'the connection' (al-waṣl) which is the letter after the rhyme.

And one who is full of tricks and stratagems is called 'a cunning one' (wiṣāl qiṭṭā').

And 'purebred' (al-mawṣūl) among animals is one whose offspring is solely from one sire, from Ibn Al-A'rabi. He recited: (This is a young camel that is not 'purebred' (bi-al-mawṣūl) ... but from a stallion that visits and impregnates...)

واليأصول: الأصل، قال أبو وجزة: (يهز روقي رمالي كأنهما ... عودا مداوس يأصول ويأصول) يريد: أصل وأصل.

And 'to be rooted' (ya'ṣūl) means 'the origin' (al-aṣl). Abu Wajzah said: (My horns shake the sands as if they were ... two branches, deeply 'rooted' (ya'ṣūl wa ya'ṣūl)) meaning: origin and origin.

ويقال: ضربه ضربة لا توصل، أي: لا تداوى، وهو مجاز.

And it is said: 'He struck him a blow that cannot be 'healed' (tuwṣal),' meaning: it cannot be treated, and this is a metaphor.
