النكلة، بالضم، من قولهم: نكل به نكلة قبيحة، كأنه رماه بما ينكله
Al-Nakaalah (with dammah) is from their saying: he treated him with a bad deterrent (n-k-l-ah), as if he threw at him something that deters him.
فجعلنها نكلا لما بين يديها وما خلفها
So We made it a deterrent for those who were before it and those who came after it.
أي: جعلنا هذه الفعلة عبرة ينكل أن يفعل مثلها فاعل، فيناله مثل الذي نال اليهود المعتدين في السبت
Meaning: We made this deed a lesson so that anyone who does the like would be deterred from doing it, and thus suffer the same fate as the transgressing Jews on the Sabbath.
نكل الرجل كسمع: قبل النكال
The man accepted (n-k-l) as in سمع (sami'a): he accepted the punishment.
واتقوا الله وخلوا بيننا ... نبلغ الثأر وينكل من نكل
And fear Allah and leave us alone... so we can achieve vengeance and deter whoever is deterred.
إنه لنكل شر، بالكسر، أي: ينكل به أعداؤه

إن لدينا أنكالا وجحيما
Indeed, with Us are fetters and a blazing fire.
أو هو قيد من نار
Or it is a chain of fire.
ضرب من اللجم، شد يد
A type of severe bridle, used to restrain the hand.
أو هو لجام البريد، سمي به؛ لأنه ينكل به الملجم، أي: يدفع
Or it is the bridle of the courier horse, named so because the one being bridled is deterred by it, meaning: pushed forward.
كما سميت حكمة الدابة حكمة؛ لأنها تمنع الدابة عن الصعوبة
Just as the horse's bit is called 'hikmah' because it prevents the horse from being difficult.

And Al-Munakkil (like maq'ad): the rock.
فارم على أقفائهم بمنكل
So throw upon their necks with a rock.
بصخرة أو عرض جيش جحفل
With a rock or the expanse of a vast army.
والمنكل، كمنبر: الذي ينكل بالإنسان
And Al-Munakkil (like minbar): the one who deters a person.
وأنكله عن حاجته: إذا دفعه عنها
And he deterred him from his need: if he pushed him away from it.
والناكل: الضعيف والجبان
And Al-Naakil: the weak and the cowardly.
مضر صخرة الله التي لا تنكل
Muddar is the rock of Allah which cannot be deterred.
أي: لا تدفع عما وقعت عليه
Meaning: it is not pushed away from what it has fallen upon.
وقيل: لا تغلب
And it was said: it is not overcome.
يؤتى بقوم في النكول
A people will be brought in chains.
ونكل الرجل، كعني: دفع وأذل
And the man was pushed away (n-k-l) as in 'ani: he was pushed and humbled.
النكل، بالكسر: الذي يغلب قرنه
Al-Nakl (with kasr): the one who overcomes his opponent.
النكل، بالتحريك من التنكيل، وهو المنع والتنحية عما يريد
Al-Nakl (with harakah) is from Al-Tankil, which is preventing and removing from what one desires.
غير نكل في قدم، ولا وهنا في عزم
Not hesitant in advancing, nor weak in resolve.
هو بالكسر، أي: بغير جبن ولا إحجام في الإقدام
It is with kasr, meaning: without cowardice or hesitation in advancing.
وأنكل الحجر عن مكانه: إذا دفعه عنه
