Abu Amr used to differentiate between 'nazaltu' and 'anzaltu', but did not mention the basis of the difference.

وفرق جماعة من أرباب التحقيق، فقالوا: التنزيل: تدريجي، والإنزال دفعي

A group of scholars of verification differentiated, saying: 'Tanzil' is gradual, and 'Inzal' is instantaneous.

وإنما خص لفظ الإنزال دون التنزيل لما روي أن القرآن أنزل دفعة واحدة، إلى السماء الدنيا

The word 'al-inzal' was specifically used instead of 'al-tanzil' because it is narrated that the Quran was sent down all at once, to the lowest heaven.

ثم إن إنزال الشيء قد يكون بنفسه، كقوله تعالى: وأنزلنا من السماء ماء

Then, the sending down of a thing may be by itself, as in His saying: 'And We sent down from the sky water'.

وقد يكون بإنزال أسبابه والهداية إليه، ومنه قوله تعالى: وأنزلنا الحديد فيه بأس شديد
