يقال: مهلا يا رجل، وكذا للأنثى، وفي العباب للإثنين والجمع، زاد في الصحاح: والمؤنث، وهي موحدة بمعنى أمهل: أي ارفق واسكن لا تعجل.

It is said: Mahlan, O man, and likewise for a female, and in Al-'Ubab for two and for a group, and in Sahih it is added: and for the feminine, and it is singular meaning amhil: meaning be gentle and calm, do not rush.

تقول مجيبا، أي إذا قيل لك مهلا قلت: لا مهل والله، ولا تقول: لا مهلا والله.

You say in response, meaning if you are told 'Mahlan', you say: 'La mahla, by God', and you do not say: 'La mahlan, by God'.

ما مهل والله بمغنية عنك

By God, there is no respite that will avail you.

أقول له إذا ما جاء مهلا ... وما مهل بواعظة الجهول

I say to him when he comes, 'Mahlan'... and there is no forbearance that admonishes the ignorant.

أقول له مهلا ولا مهل عنده

I say to him, 'Mahlan', and there is no forbearance with him.

يقال: رزق مهلا: إذا ركب الذنوب والخطايا فمهل ولم يعجل.

It is said: He was granted respite: if he committed sins and transgressions, he was given respite and not rushed.

والمهل، بالضم: اسم يجمع معدنيات الجواهر الأرضية كالفضة والحديد ونحوهما، كالذهب والنحاس، وقال أبو عبيدة: هو كل فلز أذيب.

And al-mahl (with damma): is a name for molten earthly minerals like silver, iron, and the like, such as gold and copper, and Abu Ubaidah said: it is every melted metal.

وهو يضرب إلى الصفرة، دسم، يدهن به الإبل في الشتاء، والقطران الخاثر لا يهنأ به، كالمهلة، بزيادة الهاء.

It tends towards yellow, is greasy, and is used to anoint camels in winter, and thick tar is not suitable for it, like al-muhlah, with the addition of ha.

وهو قوله تعالى: يغاثوا بماء كالمهل، وسئل ابن مسعود عن المهل، فأذاب فضة فجعلت تميع وتلون، فقال: هذا ممن أشبه ما أنتم راؤون بالمهل.

And it is His saying, the Almighty: They will be given water like molten brass. Ibn Mas'ud was asked about al-mahl, so he melted silver and it began to liquefy and change color, and he said: This is similar to what you see as al-mahl.

قيل: هو الزيت عامته أو درديه، عن أبي عمرو، وبه فسر الزجاج قوله تعالى: يوم تكون السماء كالمهل، وقيل: هو العكر المغلى

It was said: it is oil, most of it or its dregs, from Abu Amr, and with this Al-Zajjaj interpreted His saying, the Almighty: the Day when the sky will be like molten brass, and it was said: it is boiled sediment.

وكأنما أسلاتهم مهنوءة ... بالمهل من ندب الكلوم إذا جرى

And as if their wounds were smeared... with molten substance from the scars of wounds when they flow.

وقال أبو عبيد: المهل في غير القرآن: ما يتحات عن الخبزة من الرماد والجمر، إذا أخرجت من الملة

And Abu Ubaid said: Al-mahl outside of the Quran: is what falls from the bread from ash and embers, when it is taken out of the oven.

هو في حديث أبي بكر رضي الله عنه: القيح وصديد الميت، عن أبي عمرو

It is in the hadith of Abu Bakr, may God be pleased with him: pus and the gore of the dead, from Abu Amr.

ومنه روي الحديث المذكور، ويحرك، وهذه عن ابن عباد، وبه روي الحديث أيضا.

And from it the mentioned hadith is narrated, and it is vocalized with damma, and this is from Ibn Abbad, and by it the hadith is also narrated.

ومهل البعير مهلا: طلاه بالخضخاض، فهو ممهول

And mahala the camel mahlan: he smeared it with mud, so it is mamhool.

والمهل، محركة: التقدم في الخير، يقال: فلان ذو مهل: أي ذو تقدم في الخير، ولا يقال في الشر

And al-mahl, vocalized with damma: is advancement in good. It is said: So-and-so is dhu mahl: meaning he has advancement in good, and it is not said for evil.

كم فيهم من أشم الأنف ذي مهل ... يأبى الظلامة منه الضيغم الضاري

How many among them are there of noble lineage, possessing precedence... who refuse injustice, the fierce lion.

وإذا سرتم إلى العدو فمهلا مهلا، أي رفقا رفقا، وإذا وقعت العين على العين فمهلا مهلا، أي تقدما تقدما، الساكن للرفق، والمتحرك للتقدم

يقال: تمهل في الأمر: إذا تقدم فيه

يقال: خذ المهلة في أمرك، بالضم: أي خذ العدة.

It is said: take al-muhlah in your affair, with damma: meaning take the preparation.

يقال: أخذ فلان على فلان المهلة: إذا تقدمه في سن أو أدب.

It is said: So-and-so took al-muhlah over so-and-so: if he preceded him in age or manners.

وأمهل: بالغ وأعذر

And amhala: he exerted himself and made excuses.

لعمري لقد أمهلت في نهي خالد ... عن الأم إما يعصينك خالد

By my life, you have exerted yourself fully in warning Khalid... against the mother, if Khalid disobeys you.

ويروى أملهت: أي بالغت وأعذرت.

And it is narrated amhalt: meaning you exerted yourself and made excuses.

قال ابن الأعرابي: الماهل: السريع، وهو المتقدم.

Ibn Al-A'rabi said: Al-mahil: the swift, who is the one who has advanced.

وأبو مهل، محركة: عروة بن عبد الله الجعفي من تابع التابعين.

And Abu Mahl, vocalized with damma: Urwah ibn Abdullah Al-Ju'fi, from the Tabi'in.

واتمهل اتمهلالا: اعتدل وانتصب، نقله الجوهري، كاتمأل، الهمزة بدل من الهاء

And atammahal atammahlalan: to become straight and erect, as narrated by Al-Jauhari, like atama'al, the hamza is a substitute for ha.

في تليل كأنه جذع نخل ... متمهل مشذب الأكراب

In a hillock like a palm trunk... tall and pruned of its branches.

والاتمهلال أيضا: سكون وفتور.

And al-atammahlal also: stillness and languor.

قال أبو حنيفة: المهلة، بالضم: بقية جمر في الرماد.

Abu Hanifa said: Al-muhlah, with damma: the remainder of embers in the ashes.

والمتمهل من الرجال: الطويل.

And al-mutamahhil among men: the tall.

والمهل، محركة: الهداية للأمر قبل ركوبه.

And al-mahl, vocalized with damma: guidance to a matter before undertaking it.

ومهلته وأمهلته: سكنته وأخرته.

And mahaltuhu and amhaltuhu: I calmed him and delayed him.
