وهو بستاني كثير الوجود وشامي، يقال: إنه مركب من وضع بزر السلجم في الفجل والعكس، وكله جيد لوجع المفاصل، واليرقان، وعرق النسا، والنقرس، ولوجع الكبد الحاصل من البرد

It is cultivated and widespread, and Syrian. It is said to be a hybrid of planting turnip seeds in radish and vice versa, and all of it is good for joint pain, jaundice, sciatica, gout, and liver pain caused by cold.

دخله في تجفيف الاستسقاء عظيم، يمنع من نهش الأفاعي والعقارب خاصة، حتى إن آكله لا يضره لسعها

Its use in drying up ascites is great. It prevents snake and scorpion bites especially, to the extent that one who eats it is not harmed by their sting.

هو بعد الطعام يهضم ويجشئ ويخرج الرياح ويلين تليينا لطيفا، وقبله يطفئه

After food, it aids digestion, causes burping, expels wind, and provides gentle laxation; before food, it extinguishes (hunger).

وأقوى ما فيه بزره ثم قشره ثم ورقه ثم لحمه

And the strongest part of it is its seed, then its peel, then its leaves, then its flesh.

وسف بزره ينعظ ويزيد الباه، ويصلح برد الكبد وفساد الاستمراء شربا، ويزيل البهق طلاء

And consuming its seed enhances virility and increases sexual potency, rectifies liver coldness and digestive disorders when drunk, and removes vitiligo when applied topically.

ومن خواص الفجل أيضا: أنه ينفي وينقي الصدر والمعدة، ويبرئ السعال مصلوقا

Among the properties of radish is also: that it clears and purifies the chest and stomach, and heals cough when boiled.

وماؤه يفتح السدد، وعصارة أغصانه تفتت الحصى بالسكنجبين

Its water opens blockages, and the juice of its branches breaks up stones with vinegar.

وأكله يحسن اللون وينبت الشعر المتناثر، وكذا طلاؤه في داء الثعلب

And eating it improves complexion and grows scattered hair, and so does its topical application for alopecia.

وإن قور وطبخ فيه دهن الورد أزال الصمم قطورا، وكذا دهن بزره، وماؤه يجلو البياض كحلا، وجرمه لحل المادة ضمادا

And if it is hollowed out and cooked with rose oil, it removes deafness when used as drops, and so does its seed oil. Its water clarifies corneal opacities when used as kohl, and its pulp resolves humors as a poultice.

وهو يضر الرأس والحلق، ويصلحه العسل

And it harms the head and throat, and honey rectifies it.

وحب الفجل دواء آخر وليس هذا الفجل الذي هو من البقول، قاله أبو حنيفة

And the seed of 'fajl' is another medicine, and this is not the radish that is a vegetable, according to Abu Hanifa.

وقال الحكيم داود: بل هو نوع من أنواع هذا الفجل بري مستطيل كثير الوجود في صعيد مصر، ومنه يتخذ دهن الفجل من بزره، ويعرف بالسيمعة

And Hakim Dawud said: Rather, it is a type of this radish, wild, elongated, and abundant in Upper Egypt, and from its seed, radish oil is made, and it is known as 'al-Sim'ah'.

والفنجلة والفنجلى وعلى الأولى اقتصر الجوهري، وقال: مشية فيها استرخاء كمشية الشيخ

And 'al-finjalah' and 'al-finjalah' (variant), and Al-Jawhari limited himself to the first, and he said: A gait with looseness, like the gait of an old man.

فإن تريني في المشيب والعله فصرت أمشي القعولى والفنجله

If you see me in old age and infirmity, then I walk with a stoop and a relaxed gait.

وتارة أنبث نبثا نقثله ورواية ابن القطاع في الأبنية، قال الراجز: قاربت أمشي الفنجلى والقعوله

And at times I move with a shuffling gait, carrying it. And the narration of Ibn al-Qatta' in the 'Abniyah' (structures), the poet said: I almost walk with a shuffling and stooped gait.

والفاجل: القامر عن ابن الأعرابي، وفي بعض النسخ: الفاجر، وهو غلط

And 'al-fajil': the gambler, according to Ibn al-A'rabi, and in some versions: 'al-fajir' (sinner), which is an error.

وافتجل أمرا: اختلقه واخترعه، قاله ابن عباد

And 'iftajala' (verb form VIII) a matter: to invent it and fabricate it, said Ibn 'Abbad.

ومما يستدرك عليه: الفجال، ككتان: بائع الفجل
