عال الشيء فلانا يعوله عولا: غلبه وثقل عليه وأهمه
Something overcame him, weighed heavily upon him, and worried him.
ولا يعل أن يأتيني بهم جميعا
It will not be difficult for me to bring them all to me.
ويقال: لا! يعلني، أي لا يغلبني
And it is said: No! It does not overcome me, meaning it does not defeat me.
ويكفي العشيرة ما عالها وإن كان أصغرهم مولدا
And the tribe is sufficed by what overwhelms it, even if he was the youngest born.
عالت، الفريضة في الحساب، تعول عولا: زادت
The share in the calculation increased, meaning it became more.
وهو أن تزيد سهاما فيدخل النقصان على أهل الفرائض

وذلك أن الفريضة إذا عالت فهي تميل على أهل الفريضة جميعا فتنقصهم

والمعروف: عال الرجل يعول: إذا جار
And the known meaning is: a man 'ala' means he was unjust.
وأعال يعيل: إذا كثر عياله.

A man 'awala' means he became poor.
وأعال الرجل: رفع صوته بالبكاء والصياح، كعول تعويلا
And a man 'a'ala' raised his voice in crying and shouting, like 'awwala'.
وقد تكون العولة: حرارة وجد الحزين والمحب من غير نداء ولا بكاء
And 'al-awlah' can be the heat of grief or love felt by a sad or loving person, without calling or crying.
للصدر منه عويل فيه حشرجة

كان إذا سمع الحديث أخذه العويل والزويل حتى يحفظه
When he heard a hadith, he would be overcome by wailing and lamentation until he memorized it.
زعمت فإن تلحق فضن مبرز جواد وإن تسبق فنفسك! أعول
You claim that if you catch up, you are a generous, distinguished one, and if you precede, then you yourself are the one who relies (or wails).
أعول عليه إذا أدل عليه دالة وحمل عليه
He relied on him when he made a claim against him and burdened him.
عول علي بما شئت، أي استعن بي
Rely on me with whatever you wish, meaning seek help from me.

What overcomes it is what is overcoming it, meaning what defeats it is what defeats it.
فليس يعولك أن تصرما
It does not overcome you that you should separate.
بسدو يديه عيل ما هو عائله

والعول: كل ما عالك من الأمر، أي أهمك
And 'al-'awl' is everything that concerns you from the matter, meaning it worries you.
والعول أيضا: المستعان به في المهمات.
And 'al-'awl' is also: that which is sought for help in important matters.

والمعول، كمنبر: الحديدة ينقر بها الجبال
And 'al-mi'wal', like 'minbar': the iron rod with which mountains are struck.
وهو أن يقطع الشجر فيستظل به من المطر.
This is when trees are cut to provide shade from the rain.
وعليه المعول: أي المتكل.
And upon him is the reliance, meaning the one depended upon.
ما له عال ولا مال
He has neither dependents nor wealth.
مال أي كثر عياله، ومال: جار في حكمه.
Meaning his dependents were many, and he deviated in his judgment.
عال عاليا، كقولهم: لعا لك عاليا يدعى له بالإقالة
He stumbled, 'aliyan', as they say: 'May you be spared', meaning a prayer for relief.
