And Banu Al-Atwal: a clan of Arabs, according to Ibn Duraid.

And Al-Talah: the female camel, Dhu Al-Rummah said, describing his she-camel:

والمطول، كمنبر: الذكر، كما في العباب.

And the seven long ones, like 'sard', in the Quran: from Surat Al-Baqarah to Surat Al-A'raf, they are Al-Baqarah, Aal-Imran, Al-Nisa, Al-Ma'idah, Al-An'am, and Al-A'raf. These are six consecutive surahs. They differed about the seventh, and it was said: it is Surat Yunus, peace be upon him, or Al-Anfal and Bara'ah together, because they are one surah for him, i.e., for those who hold this opinion. Some said: it is Al-Kahf, and it was said: Al-Tawbah, and it was said: Al-Hawamim. The correct view is what the author mentioned first.

والطول: جمع الطولى، يقال: هي السورة الطولى، وهن الطول، وقال الشاعر:

And Al-Tuwal: the plural of Al-Tula, it is said: it is the long surah, and they are Al-Tuwal. And the poet said:

سكنته بعد ما طارت نعامته ... بسورة الطور لما فاتني الطول

I settled in it after its ostrich flew away... with Surat Al-Tur when I missed the length.

وفي الحديث: أوتيت السبع والطول

And in the Hadith: I was given the seven and the long ones.

وفي المثل: قصيرة من طويلة، أي تمرة من نخلة، يضرب في اختصار الكلام، وجودته.

And in the proverb: short from tall, meaning a date from a palm tree, used to emphasize brevity and quality of speech.

والطويلة:) روضة بالصمان، واسعة، عرضها قدر ميل في طول ثلاثة أميال، قاله الأزهري، وقال مرة: تكون ثلاثة أميال في مثلها، وفيها مساك للمطر، إذا امتلأ شربوا الشهر والشهرين، وأنشد:

And Al-Tawilah:) a meadow in Al-Summan, wide, its width is about a mile and its length is three miles, according to Al-Azhar. He said once: it is three miles by the same, and it has reservoirs for rain. When full, they drink for a month or two, and he recited:

عاد قلبي من الطويلة عيد

My heart returned from Al-Tawilah as a celebration.

والطولى، كطوبى: تأنيث الأطول، ومنه حديث أم سلمة: أنه كان يقرأ في المغرب بطولى الطوليين، أي بأطول السورتين الطويلتين، يعني الأنعام والأعراف.

And Al-Tula, like 'Tuba': feminine of Al-Atwal. And from it is the Hadith of Umm Salamah: that he used to recite in the Maghrib prayer with the 'Tula' of the two long ones, meaning the longer of the two long surahs, i.e., Al-An'am and Al-A'raf.

والطولى أيضا: الحالة الرفيعة، ج: طول، كصرد.

And Al-Tula also: the elevated status, plural: Tuwal, like 'sard'.

والطويل من بحور الشعر: معروف، وقال الجوهري: من جنس العروض، وهي كلمة مولدة، سمي بذلك لأنه أطول الشعر كله، وذلك أن أصله ثمانية وأربعون حرفا، وأكثر حروف الشعر من غير دائرته اثنان وأربعون حرفا، ولأن أوتاده مبتدأ بها، فالطول لمتقدم أجزائه لازم أبدا، لأن أول أجزائه أوتاد، والزوائد أبدا تتقدم أسبابها ما أوله وتد، كذا في المحكم، ووزنه فعولن مفاعلين، ثماني مرات، مثل قول امرئ القيس:

And Al-Tawil among the meters of poetry: is known. Al-Jawahari said: it is from the category of 'Arud. It is a coined word, named so because it is the longest of all poetry, as its origin is forty-eight letters, and most poetry outside its circle has forty-two letters, and because its feet begin with 'awtad'. Thus, length is always necessary for its preceding parts, because its first parts are 'awtad', and the additions always precede their causes when the beginning is 'watad', as in Al-Muhkam. Its meter is Fa'ulun Mafa'ilun, eight times, like the saying of Imru' al-Qais:

ألا انعم صباحا أيها الطلل البالي ... وهل ينعمن من كان في العصر الخالي

Hark! Have a good morning, O ruined dwelling... And can he who was in the past be happy?

وبينهم طائلة: أي عداوة، وترة، نقله الجوهري، والجمع: الطوائل، وهي الذحول والأوتار، وفلان يطلب بني فلان بطائلة: أي بوتر، كأن له فيهم ثأرا يطلبه بدم قتيله.

And between them is 'ta'ilah': meaning enmity, a grudge. Reported by Al-Jawahari. The plural is: Al-Tawa'il, which are grudges and vengeances. And so-and-so seeks from the family of so-and-so with 'ta'ilah': meaning with a vengeance, as if he has a right to seek from them for the blood of his slain.

ويقال: هذا أمر لا طائل فيه، إذا لم يكن فيه غناء ومزية، يقال ذلك في التذكير والتأنيث.

And it is said: This is a matter with no 'ta'il', meaning it has no benefit or advantage. This is said for both masculine and feminine.

ولم يحل منه بطائل: خاص بالجحد، أي لا يتكلم به إلا فيه.

And he did not achieve anything beneficial from it: this is specific to negation, meaning it is not said except in a negative context.

ويقال: استطالوا عليهم: أي قتلوا منهم أكثر مما كانوا قتلوا، نقله الجوهري.

And it is said: They 'istatala' upon them: meaning they killed more of them than they had killed of yours, as reported by Al-Jawahari.

الرجال الأطاول، جمع الأطول، كما في الصحاح.

The men Al-Atāwil, plural of Al-Atwal, as in Al-Sihah.

وتطاولا: تباريا.

And they competed: they competed with each other.

وتطاول عليهم الرب بفضله: تطول، أو أشرف، وهو من باب طارقت النعل، في إطلاقها على الواحد.

And the Lord 'tatāwala' upon them with His grace: meaning He bestowed favor, or He looked down upon them. This is from the pattern of 'taraqat al-na'l' (shoe sole pattern) in its application to the singular.

وفي الحديث: أطولكن يدا أسرع بي لحوقا، أي أمدكن يدا بالعطاء، من الطول.

And in the Hadith: The one among you with the longest hand will be the quickest to join me, meaning the most generous of you with the hand in giving, from 'Al-Tawl'.

وأطال لفرسه: شده في الحبل.

And he lengthened for his horse: he tied it securely to the rope.

وتطاول فلان: أظهر الطول، أو الطول، قال الله تعالى: فتطاول عليهم العمر، أي طال، ومثله قول الشاعر:

And so-and-so 'tatāwala': meaning he showed arrogance, or length. Allah Almighty said: 'And their lives were lengthened for them' (fatatawala 'alayhim al-'umr), meaning it became long. And similar is the saying of the poet:

تطاول ليلك بالإثمد

May your night be lengthened with kohl.

والطويل: لقب حميد بن أبي حميد تيرويه، مولى طلحة الطلحات، من ثقات التابعين، كان قصيرا، طويل اليدين، فسمي بالضد، أو لطول يديه، مات سنة.

And Al-Tawil: a nickname of Hamid bin Abi Hamid Tayrawaih, a freed slave of Talhah Al-Talhat, one of the trusted Tabi'in. He was short but had long arms, so he was named by the opposite, or due to the length of his arms. He died in the year.

وقول الفرزدق: بيتا دعائمه أعز وأطول أي عزيزة طويلة.

And the saying of Al-Farazdaq: A house whose pillars are more honored and longer, meaning honored and long.

وفي حديث الدعاء: وبك أطاول، من الطول، وهو الفضل، والعلو على) الأعداء.

And in the supplication Hadith: And by You I seek superiority, from 'Al-Tawl', which is favor and dominance over the enemies.

والفحل يتطاول على إبله: أي يسوقها كيف يشاء، ويذب عنها الفحول.

And the stud camel 'yatatawal' upon its herd: meaning it drives them as it wishes and defends them from other males.

ورجل - طولاني، بالضم، ومطاول: كثير الطول، عامية.

And a man - 'tulani', with dammah, and 'mutawil': of great height, colloquial.
