He is a follower of misguidance, with a kasra on the ta' and dad, by annexation, according to Tha'lab, and also as a description, and similarly narrated by Ibn al-A'rabi: meaning there is no good in him, nor any good with him.

وقال ابن الأعرابي مرة: هو تبع ضلة: أي داهية لا خير فيه

And Ibn al-A'rabi said another time: He is a follower of misguidance: meaning a cunning person with no good in him.

وأضله: دفنه، والشيء: غيبه، وهو مجاز

And 'aḍallahu': to bury him, and a thing: to conceal it, and this is metaphorical.

فآب مضلوه بعين جلية وغودر بالجولان حزم ونائل

So his buriers returned with clear evidence, and he was left in al-Jawlan, with firmness and generosity.

أي دافنوه حين مات، وعين جلية: أي خبر صادق أنه مات

Meaning they buried him when he died, and 'ayn jalīyah': meaning true news that he died.

وأضلت به أمه: دفنته، نادر، عن ابن الأعرابي

And 'aḍallat bihi ummuhu': his mother buried him, rare, from Ibn al-A'rabi.

And 'aḍ-ḍilal', with harakah: flowing water under a rock, which the sun does not reach.

أو هو الماء الجاري بين الشجر

Or it is water flowing between trees.

وقال اللحياني: ضلاضل الماء، وصلاصله: بقاياه، الواحدة ضلضلة، وصلصلة

And al-Laythiyānī said: 'ḍalāḍil' of water, and 'ṣalāṣiluhu': its remnants, the singular is 'ḍilḍilah', and 'ṣalṣalah'.

وأرض ضلضلة، وضلضل، بفتحتين فيهما، وكعلبطة، وعلبط، وعلابط، وهذه عن اللحياني: غليظة

And 'arḍ ḍilḍilah', and 'ḍalḍal', with fatha on both in them, and like 'alabaṭah', 'alabaṭ', and 'alābaṭ', and these are from al-Laythiyānī: meaning thick/hard.

وقال سيبويه: الضلضل مقصور عن الضلاضل

And Sibawayh said: 'aḍ-ḍalḍal' is a shortened form of 'aḍ-ḍalāḍil'.

وقال الفراء: مكان ضلضل وجندل: وهو الشديد ذو الحجارة

And al-Farra' said: a 'ḍalḍal' and 'jandal' place: meaning hard and stony.

وقال الجوهري: الضلضل، والضلضلة: الأرض الغليظة، عن الأصمعي

And al-Jawharī said: 'aḍ-ḍalḍal', and 'aḍ-ḍilḍilah': hard ground, from al-Aṣmaʿī.

And like 'alābaṭ', and 'alabaṭah': a skilled guide, from Ibn al-A'rabi, and the correct is: 'walabaṭ', as is the text of al-ʿAbbāb.

And 'tiḍlāl', with fatha, a place name, and falsehood is called 'ḍall bi-tiḍlāl'.

وضليلاء، بفتح فكسر: ع، ويقال: هو بالظاء المشالة، كما، سيأتي

And 'ḍalīlā', with fatha then kasra: a place name, and it is said: it is with the unpointed dhā', as will come.

أضله: جعله ضالا

'Aḍallahu': to make him astray.

الإضلال في كلام العرب، ضد الإرشاد، يقال: أضللت: فلانا، إذا وجهته للضلال عن الطريق

Al-iḍlāl in the speech of the Arabs, is the opposite of guidance. It is said: 'aḍlaltu' [I caused to go astray]: a person, if you direct him to go astray from the path.

من هداه سبل الخير اهتدى ... ناعم البال ومن شاء أضل

Whoever guides him to the ways of good is guided, content of mind, and whoever He wills, He causes to go astray.

رب إنهن أضللن كثيرا من الناس، أي ضلوا بسببها، لأن الأصنام لا تفعل شيئا، ولا تعقل

My Lord, they have caused many of the people to go astray, meaning they went astray because of them, because idols do nothing and do not reason.

وذلك إما بأن يضل عنك الشيء، كقولك: أضللت البعير، أي ضل عني

And that is either that the thing goes astray from you, like your saying: 'aḍlaltu al-baʿīr' [I lost the camel], meaning it went astray from me.

ولأضلنهم ولأمنينهم

And I will surely cause them to go astray and I will surely delude them.

ولقد أضل منكم جبلا كثيرا

And he had already caused many of you to go astray.

رب إنهن أضللن كثيرا من الناس

My Lord, they have caused many of the people to go astray.

والذين كفروا فتعسا لهم وأضل أعمالهم

And those who disbelieved – woe to them and He will waste their deeds.

وما يضل به إلا الفاسقين

And none will be misguided by it except the defiantly disobedient.

ويضل الله الظالمين

And Allah misguides whom He wills and guides whom He wills.

هو ضال تال

He is astray and following.

ولا الضالين

Nor the ones who are astray.

رآها الفؤاد فاستضل ضلاله ... نيافا من البيض الكرام العطابل

The heart saw them and sought its straying... noble, generous, and plump white ones.

طلب منه أن يضل فضل، كما يقال: جن جنونه

He asked him to go astray, as it is said: his madness intensified.

إذا ناقة شدة برحل ونمرق ... إلى حكم بعدي فضل ضلالها

When a she-camel is tied with a saddle and cushion... to a judgment after me, her straying is lost.

وأضله إضلالا: ضيعه

'Aḍallahu iḍlālan': to waste him.

وأهلكه وأضله: وجده ضالا

And to destroy him and 'aḍallahu': to find him astray.

أتى قوما فأضلهم، أي وجدهم ضلالا، غير مهتدين إلى الحق

He came to a people and 'aḍallahu' them, meaning he found them astray, not guided to the truth.

إن المجرمين في ضلال وسعر

Indeed, the criminals are in error and blaze.

والضلضلة، كعلبطة: الضلال

And 'aḍ-ḍilḍilah', like 'alabaṭah': misguidance.

لا يضل ربي ولا ينسى

My Lord does not go astray nor does He forget.

في تضليل، أي في باطل وإضلال لأنفسهم

In misguidance, meaning in falsehood and misleading themselves.

أنف كلائحة المضل جرور

The nose of the mirage, which leads astray, is drawn.

إنك تهدي الضال، ولا تهدي المتضال

You guide the astray, but you do not guide the one who sees himself as astray.

أضل أعمالهم، أي لم يجازهم على ما عملوا من خير

'Aḍalla aʿmālahum': meaning He did not reward them for the good they did.

قد ضل سعيك

Your effort has gone to waste.

ضل عن القصد، إذا جار

He deviated from the intention, if he wronged.

وفلان يلومني ضلة، إذا لم يوفق للرشاد في عذله

And so-and-so blames me ineffectively, if he is not guided to righteousness in his blame.

فتنة مضلة: تضل الناس

A misleading tribulation: it causes people to go astray.

وكذلك: طريق مضل

And likewise: a misleading path.

المضل: الأرض المتيهة

Al-muḍill: the trackless land.

أرض مضل: يضل الناس فيها

A 'muḍill' land: people get lost in it.

أخذت أرضا مضلة ومضلة، وأخذ أرضا مجهلا مضلا

I took a misleading and trackless land, and he took a trackless land.

ألا طرقت صحبي عميرة إنها ... لنا بالمروراة المضل طروق

Did 'Umayrah visit my companions? Indeed, she visits us in the trackless desert.

أضل الله ضلالك، أي ضل عنه فذهب فلا تضل

'Aḍalla Allāhu ḍalālaka': meaning your straying has gone from him, so go and do not stray.

وما مواعيدها إلا الأضاليل

And their promises are nothing but errors.

تمادى في أضاليل الهوى

He persisted in the errors of desire.

أضلني أمر كذا وكذا، أي لم أقدر عليه

'Aḍallanī amru kadhā wa kadhā': meaning I was unable to achieve it.

إني إذا خلة تضيفني ... تريد مالي أضلني عللي

When a friendship visits me... wanting my wealth, my excuses failed me.

والضل، بالضم: اسم من ضل إذا ضاع وهلك

And 'aḍ-ḍill', with damma: a noun from 'ḍalla' if it is lost and perished.

وفعل ذلك ضلة، أي في ضلالة

And he did that in error, meaning in misguidance.

وذهب ضلة: أي لم يدر أين ذهب

And he went astray: meaning he did not know where he went.

وقع في وادي تضلل، وتضلل، بفتحتين وبكسرتين، كلاهما عن ابن عباد

He fell into the wadi of 'taḍallul', and 'taḍallul', with fatha and kasra, both from Ibn ʿAbbād.

Let your water flow, release it.

وتضلل الماء من تحت الحجر: أي: ذهب

And the water flowed from under the stone: meaning: it went away.

A thing is lost: it perishes.

فقبلي مات الخالدان كلاهما ... عميد بني جحوان وابن المضلل
