وَقَالَ الأَزْهَرِيُّ: سَمِعْتُ أَعْرَابِيًّا يَقُولُ لآخَرَ: اسْقِنِي زُغْلَةً مِنَ اللَّبَنِ، يُرِيدُ قَدْرَ مَا يَمْلَأُ فَمَهُ
Al-Azhari said: I heard an Arab saying to another: 'Give me a gulp of milk', meaning an amount that fills his mouth.
وَأَزْغَلَ الطَّائِرُ فَرْخَهُ: زَقَّهُ
And the bird fed its young: it regurgitated food for it.
فَأَزْغَلَتْ فِي حَلْقِهِ زُغْلَةً ... لَمْ تُخْطِئِ الجِيدَ وَلَمْ تَشْفَتِرْ
So she poured into its throat a gulp... it did not miss the neck and did not fail to quench.
وَأَزْغَلَتِ الطَّعْنَةُ بِالدَّمِ، مِثْلَ أَوْزَغَتْ
And the wound emitted blood, like 'awzaghat'.
وَلَقَدْ دَفَعْتُ إِلَى دُرَيْدٍ طَعْنَةً ... نَجْلَاءَ تَزْغَلُ مِثْلَ عَطِّ المَنْحَرِ
And indeed I delivered to Durayd a wound... wide-gaping, spurting like the flow from the throat.
وَالزَّغْلُولُ: الطِّفْلُ، وَالجَمْعُ الزَّغَالِيلُ
And the 'zaghlul': the child, and the plural is 'zaghalil'.
وَتَقُولُ: كَيْفَ زَغْلُولُكَ، أَيْ صَغِيرُكَ
And you say: 'How is your 'zaghlul', meaning your little one.
وَأَزْغَلَتِ المَرْأَةُ وَلَدَهَا: أَرْضَعَتْهُ، فَهِيَ مُزْغِلٌ
