What is the meaning of the trotting and uncovering of the shoulders, when God has established Islam?
والرمل في العروض منه، هكذا في النسخ، والظاهر أن في العبارة سقطا، صوابه ضرب منه، أو جنس منه
And 'ar-ramal' in prosody is from it, thus in the manuscripts, and it appears there is an omission in the phrase; the correct reading is 'a type of it', or 'a genus of it'.

And they armalahu, meaning the provisions: they depleted them.
إذا أرملوا زادا عقرت مطية ... تجر برجليها السريح المخدما
When they depleted their provisions, I slaughtered a mount... dragging its forelegs, the well-trodden path.
وأرمل الحبل: طوله، وكذلك القيد، إذا طوله ووسعه
And to lengthen a rope: to make it long, and likewise a tether, if he lengthens and widens it.
وأرمل السهم: تلطخ بالدم، فبقي أثره فيه، عن ابن عباد
And to stain an arrow: to be smeared with blood, so its trace remains on it, according to Ibn 'Abbad.
أرملت المرأة: صارت أرملة من زوجها، ولا يكون إ مع حاجة، كما في الأساس
A woman became armalat: she became a widow from her husband, and this is only with need, as in Al-Asas.
ورجل أرمل، وامرأة أرملة، خالف اصطلاحه هنا، لما قيل إن الأرملة أصل في النساء
And a man armal, and a woman armalah, he deviated from his convention here, because it is said that 'armalah' is primarily for women.
والأرامل: المساكين
And 'al-aramil': the needy.
إذا قال الرجل: هذا المال لأرامل بني فلان، فهو للرجال والنساء، لأن الأرامل يقع على الذكور والنساء
If a man says: 'This money is for the armil of the Banu so-and-so', it is for men and women, because 'al-aramil' applies to males and females.

A refuge for orphans, a protection for the widows.
والأرمل: العزب، وهو الذي ماتت زوجته، أو الذي لا امرأة له
And 'al-armal': the bachelor, who is one whose wife has died, or who has no wife.
كل الأرامل قد قضيت حاجتها ... فمن لحاجة هذا الأرمل الذكر
All the widows have had their needs met... so who will attend to the need of this widowed man?
الأرملة: التي مات عنها زوجها، سميت أرملة لذهاب زادها، وفقدها كاسبها
Al-armalah: she whose husband has died, she is named armalah because her provisions are gone, and she has lost her provider.
ومن الأعوام: القليل المطر، يقال: عام أرمل، وسنة رملاء، جدبة قليلة المطر، والخير، والنفع
And among the years: little rain, it is said: a year armal, and a year ramla', barren, with little rain, and little good and benefit.
وأرمولة العرفج، بالضم: جذموره، ج: أرامل، وأراميل
And 'armulat al-'urfuj', with dammah: its root, plural: aramila, aramil.
فجئت كالعود النزيع الهادج ... قيد في أرامل العرافج
And I came like a distant, weary branch... tethered to the roots of the 'urfuj'.
والرملة، بالضم: الخط الأسود، يكون على ظهر الغزال وأفخاذه، حكاه ابن بري، عن ابن خالويه
And 'ar-ramlah', with dammah: the black line, which is on the back and thighs of a gazelle, narrated by Ibn Birri, from Ibn Khilawayh.

With the departure of the caravan, its people became like every decorated one with markings.
ونعجة رملا: سوداء القوائم كلها، وسائرها أبيض
And a sheep ramla: its legs are all black, and the rest of it is white.
والأرمل من الشاء: الذي اسودت قوائمه كلها، والأنثى رملاء
And 'al-armal' of sheep: that whose legs have all turned black, and the female is ramla'.
