أو هو من دجل دجلا: إذا كذب وأخرق لأنه يدعي الربويية، وهذا من أعظم الكذب.

Or it is from dajala dajalan: if he lied and acted foolishly because he claims divinity, and this is among the greatest lies.

قيل: دجل ودجا: إذا جامع قاله الأصمعي.

It is said: dajala and dajā: if he had intercourse, said Al-Asma'i.

قيل: هو من دجل الرجل: إذا قطع نواحي الأرض سيرا قال أبو العباس: سمي دجالا لضربه في الأرض، وقطعه أكثر نواحيها.

It is said: It is from dajala al-rajul: if he traversed the regions of the earth by walking. Abu Al-Abbas said: He is named Dajjal for his striking across the land and traversing most of its regions.

أو من دجل تدجيلا: إذا غطى، لأنه يغطى على الناس بكفره، أو لأنه يغطى الأرض بكثرة جموعه، أو لأنه يدجل الحق بالباطل.

Or from dajala tadjeelan: if he covered, because he covers people with his disbelief, or because he covers the earth with the abundance of his armies, or because he obscures the truth with falsehood.

أو من دجل: إذا طلى بالذهب وكل شيء موهته بماء الذهب، فقد دجلته، سمي به لتمويهه على الناس بالباطل وتلبيسه، أو لأنه يظهر خلاف مايضمر.

Or from dajala: if he gilded, and anything you coat with gold, you have gilded it. He is named so for his misleading people with falsehood and his deception, or because he shows the opposite of what he conceals.

أو هو من الدجال كغراب للذهب أو مائه عن كراع، هكذا ضبطه الصاغاني، والصواب أن الدجال بمعنى الذهب: كشداد.

Or it is from al-dajjal like ghurab for gold or its water, according to Kra', thus was it vocalized by Al-Saghani, and the correct view is that al-dajjal means gold: like shaddad.

سمي به لأن الكنوز تتبعه حيث سار.

He is named so because treasures follow him wherever he goes.

أو من الدجال كشداد: لفرند السيف، أو من الدجالة بالتشديد أيضا للرفقة العظيمة تغطي الأرض بكثرة أهلها، وقيل: هي الرفقة تحمل المتاع للتجارة، وقال: دجالة من أعظم الوفاق أو من الدجال، كسحاب، للسرجين سمي به لأنه ينجس وجه الأرض.

Or from al-dajjal like shaddad: for the pattern of the sword, or from al-dajjālah with emphasis also for the great company that covers the earth with its people, and it was said: it is the company carrying goods for trade, and he said: a dajjalah of the greatest gatherings. Or from al-dajjal, like saḥāb, for the dung, named so because it defiles the face of the earth.

هو من دجل الناس كسكر للقاطهم، لأنهم يتبعونه فقد ورد أنه رجل من يهود، يخرج في آخرهذه الأمة.

It is from dajala al-nās like sakar for their followers, because they follow him. It has been narrated that he is a man from the Jews who will emerge at the end of this Ummah.

وأصحها وأحسنها من قال: إن الدجال هو الكذاب، وإنما دجله سحره وكذبه وافتراؤه وستره الحق بكذبه، وإظهاره خلاف ما يضمر.

And the soundest and best of these is the one who said: Indeed, Al-Dajjal is the liar, and his deception is his magic, his lies, his fabrications, his covering of the truth with his lies, and his showing the opposite of what he conceals.

وفي الحديث: أن أبا بكر رضي الله عنه خطب فاطمة رضي الله عنها إلى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، فقال: إني قد وعدتها لعلي، ولست بدجال أراد هذا المعنى.

And in the hadith: Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, proposed to Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her, to the Prophet, peace be upon him, and he said: I have promised her to Ali, and I am not a deceiver, meaning this sense.

والجمع: دجالون، كما في التهذيب.

And the plural is: dajjalun, as in Al-Tahdhib.

قال شيخنا: وقد جمعوه على دجاجلة، على غير قياس.

Our Sheikh said: And they have pluralized it as dajajilah, irregularly.

ودجلة، بالكسر هو المشهور والفتح حكاه اللحياني: نهر بغداد سمي لأنه غطى الأرض بمائه حين فاض.

And Dijlah, with kasrah, is the famous one, and the fath was narrated by Al-Lahyani: the river of Baghdad, named so because it covered the land with its water when it flooded.

وفي التهذيب: دجلة معرفة: لنهر بالعراق.

And in Al-Tahdhib: Dijlah is definite: for a river in Iraq.

تقول: عبرت دجلة، بلا لام.

You say: I crossed Dijlah, without the definite article.

ومن أمثال الحريري: أحمق من رجله، وأوسع من دجله.

And from the proverbs of Al-Hariri: More foolish than his leg, and wider than his Dijlah.

دجيل كزبير: شعب منها وفي المحكم: نهر متشعب منها.

Dujayl like Zubayr: a branch from it, and in Al-Muḥkam: a river branching from it.

وفي التهذيب: نهر صغير، يتخلج منها.

And in Al-Tahdhib: a small river, branching off from it.

ونقل شيخنا عن الخفاجي أنه نهر بالأهواز، حفره أردشير بن بابك، أول ملوك بني ساسان، بالمدائن، عليه قرى كثيرة، ومخرجه من أصبهان.

And our Sheikh transmitted from Al-Khafaji that it is a river in Ahwaz, dug by Ardashir bin Babak, the first of the Sasanian kings, in Al-Mada'in, with many villages on it, and its source is from Isfahan.

قلت: وفيه غرق شبيب الخارجي، قاله نصر.

I say: And in it, Shibib Al-Kharaji drowned, said Nasr.

قال: ودجيل أيضا: نهر عند مسكن، فتأمل.

He said: And Dujayl is also: a river near Maskin, so ponder.

يقال: بينهم دوجلة: أي كلام يتناقل، وناس مختلفون.

It is said: Between them is dujlah: meaning transmitted speech, and differing people.

والدجل: السحر.

And al-dajal: magic.

وقال الفراء: يقال: هو يدجل بالدلو، ويدلج بها، مقلوب منه.

And Al-Farra' said: It is said: he draws water with the bucket, and travels by night with it, which is an inversion of it.

ودجل أرضه تدجيلا: أصلحها بالسرجين.

And he fertilized his land with tadjeel: he improved it with dung.

والبعير المدجل، كمعظم: المهنوء بالقطران، وقد دجله.

And the mudajjal camel, like mu'azzam: the one treated with pitch, and he has smeared it.
