بتله ويبتله من حدى نصر وضرب، بتلا: قطعه
He cut it, and it was cut, from the patterns of naṣara and ḍaraba, with the meaning: he cut it.
وكبتله تبتيلا فانبتل الشيء
And he cut it with a thorough cutting, so the thing became cut off.
وتبتل: انقطع، مثل انبت
And he became cut off: he became separated, like 'inbatal'.
كأنه تيس ظباء منبتل
As if he were a gazelle-like mountain goat, separated.
وتبتل إليه تبتيلا
And dedicate yourself to Him with exclusive devotion.
معناه: انقطع إليه
Its meaning is: he became cut off and devoted to Him.
بتل الشيء بتلا: ميزه عن غيره وأبانه منه
He distinguished the thing with a distinction: he separated it from others and made it distinct.
والبتول كصبور: المنقطعة عن الرجال التي لا شهوة لها فيهم
And al-batūl (like ṣabūr): the one separated from men who has no desire for them.
سميت مريم العذراء البتول رضي الله تعالى عنها لانقطاعها من الأزواج
Mary the Virgin was named al-Batūl, may God Almighty be pleased with her, because of her separation from husbands.
لقبت فاطمة بنت سيد المرسلين عليهما الصلاة والسلام وعلى ذريتها: بالبتول، تشبيها بها في المنزلة عند الله تعالى
Fatimah, daughter of the Master of Messengers, peace and blessings be upon him and his progeny, was titled al-Batūl, in resemblance to her in status with God Almighty.
قيل: البتول من النساء: المنقطعة عن الدنيا إلى الله تعالى
It was said: al-Batūl among women is she who is cut off from the world to God Almighty.
البَتُول: الفسيلة من النخلة المنقطعة عن أمها المستغنية بنفسها
Al-Batūl: a date palm shoot separated from its mother, self-sufficient.
والمبتلة كمحسنة: أمها يستوي فيه الواحد والجمع، كما في المحكم
And al-mubtallah (like muḥsinah): its mother, the singular and plural are the same, as in al-Muḥkam.
وقد انبتلت الفسيلة من أمها وتبتلت واستبتلت: انقطعت
And the shoot has become separated from its mother, and it has become separated, and it has become separated: it has been cut off.
وصدقة بتة بتلة: منقطعة عن صاحبها
And a donation, batta batlah: separated from its owner.
منقطعة من جميع المال إلى سبيل الله تعالى
Separated from all wealth for the sake of God Almighty.
وعطاء بتل: منقطع إما أن يريد الغاية، أي إنه لا يشبهه عطاء، أو يريد: أنه منقطع لا يعطى بعده عطاء
And a batala donation: cut off, either meaning the ultimate, i.e., no donation is like it, or meaning: it is cut off, no donation is given after it.
وتبتل إلى الله تعالى وبتل تبتيلا: انقطع إليه، كما فسر الأزهري به الآية
And he devoted himself to God Almighty and devoted himself with devotion: he became cut off to Him, as al-Azhari interpreted the verse with it.
وقيل: بتل: أخلص من رياء وسمعة
And it was said: batala: he purified himself from showing off and reputation.
وقال ابن عرفة: تبتل إليه: انفرد له في طاعته، وأفردها له
And Ibn 'Arifah said: tabattala to Him: he singled himself out for His obedience, and dedicated it solely to Him.
أو تبتل: ترك النكاح وزهد فيه
Or tabattala: he abandoned marriage and renounced it.
رد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم التبتل على عثمان بن مظعون، رضي الله عنه، ولو أذن لاختصينا يعني الانقطاع عن النساء وترك النكاح
The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, rejected abstinence from marriage for Uthman ibn Madh'un, may God be pleased with him. If he had permitted it, we would have undergone castration, meaning abstaining from women and abandoning marriage.
لا رهبانية ولا تبتل في الإسلام
There is no monasticism and no abstinence from marriage in Islam.
المبتلة كمعظمة: الجميلة من النساء كأنها بتل حسنها على أعضائها: أي قطع
Al-mubtallah (like mu'aẓẓamah): the beautiful among women, as if her beauty were cut off onto her limbs: meaning perfectly proportioned.
قيل: هي التي تم خلقها لم يركب بعض لحمها بعضا فهو لذلك منماز
It was said: she is one whose creation is complete, where no part of her flesh is superimposed on another, so it is distinct.
أو هي التي في أعضائها استرسال كأن اللحم بتل عنها، عن اللحياني
Or she is one whose limbs have a flowing grace, as if the flesh were separated from them, according to Al-Lihyani.
قيل: مبتلة الخلق: منقطعة الخلق عن النساء، لها عليهن فضل
It was said: mubtalat al-khalq: one whose creation is distinct from that of women, having superiority over them.
وقال ابن الأعرابي: هي الحسنة الخلق، لا يقصر شيء عن شيء، لا تكون حسنة العين سمجة الأنف، ولا حسنة الأنف سمجة العين، ولكن تكون تامة
And Ibn Al-A'rabi said: she is of good creation, where nothing falls short of another; she is not beautiful in the eyes and ugly in the nose, nor beautiful in the nose and ugly in the eyes, but rather she is complete.
وجمل مبتل كذلك، ولا يوصف به الرجل كما في الصحاح
And a camel is mubtal likewise, and a man is not described with it, as in Al-Ṣiḥāḥ.
البتيل كأمير: المسيل عن ابن عباد، زاد غيره: في أسفل الوادي، ج: بتل ككتب
Al-batīl (like amīr): the stream bed, according to Ibn 'Abbad. Others added: in the lower part of the valley, plural: butūl (like kutub).
البتيل من الشجر: المتدلي كبائسه
Al-batīl from trees: one with drooping branches.
بتيل: جبل باليمامة فارد في فضاء، سمي بذلك لانقطاعه عن غيره، قاله ابن دريد
Batīl: a mountain in Al-Yamamah, isolated in an open space, named so for its separation from others, according to Ibn Durayd.
وقال غيره: بتيل: جبل بنجد، منقطع عن الجبال
And others said: Batīl: a mountain in Najd, separated from other mountains.
بتيل: واد لبني ذبيان، وأيضا: حجر بناء هناك، عادي مرتفع مربع الأسفل، محدد الأعلى، يرتفع نحو ثمانين ذراعا
Batīl: a valley of Banu Dhubyan, and also: a building stone there, an ancient elevated structure, square at the bottom, pointed at the top, rising about eighty cubits.
بتيلة كسفينة: ماء قرب بتيل المذكور، وهو لبني عمرو بن ربيعة بن عبد الله، رواء ببطن المرة، عن ابن دريد
Batīlah (like safīnah): a water source near the aforementioned Batīl, belonging to Banu 'Amr ibn Rabi'ah ibn 'Abd Allah, a refreshing water in the belly of Al-Murrah, according to Ibn Durayd.
بتيلة: قليب عند بتيل، في ديار بني كلاب
Batīlah: a well near Batīl, in the lands of Banu Kilab.
البتيلة: العجز في بعض اللغات، لانقطاعه عن الظهر
Al-batīlah: the buttocks in some languages, due to its separation from the back.
وكل عضو مكتنز بلحمه، منماز: بتيلة، والجمع بتائل
And every limb full of flesh, distinct: batīlah, and the plural is batā'il.
إذا المؤون مدت البتائلا
When the provisions are extended to the fleshy limbs.
وعمرة بتلاء: ليس معها غيرها وقد بتلها: أوجبها وحدها، كما في الأساس
And 'umrah batlā': she has no one with her, and He made it obligatory for her: He made it solely obligatory for her, as in Al-Asas.
يقال: مر على بتيلة وبتلاء من رأيه: أي عزيمة لا ترد عن ابن عباد
It is said: he passed by a batīlah and a batlā' of his opinion: meaning an unyielding resolve, according to Ibn 'Abbad.
قولهم: طلقها بتة بتلة، وهو تأكيد لها
Their saying: he divorced her battah battah, which is an emphasis for it.
ورجل أبتل: بعيد ما بين المنكبين
And a man abtal: far between the shoulders.
ذلك ما دينك إذ جنبت أحمالها كالبكر المبتل
That is your religion when you carry its burdens like a separated young camel.
قال ابن حبيب: المبتل: المنفرد
Ibn Habib said: al-mubtal: the solitary one.
وقال غيره: هو واحد المبتلة، وهو الذي بان فسيله منه
And others said: it is the singular of al-mubtallah, and it is that whose shoot has separated from it.
وقيل: الذي تدلت كبائسه
And it was said: one whose branches droop.
ويروى: المنبل وهو الذي نبل بسره وأرطب
And it is narrated: al-munbal, which is one whose fruit has ripened and become moist.
بتل العمري أي أوجبها
He made the 'umri obligatory, meaning he made it binding.
العمري: أن يقول: أعمرت لك داري أن تسكنها إلى آخر عمري
Al-'umri: is to say: I have granted you my house to inhabit until the end of my life.
والتبتل: التفرد
And al-tabattul: singularity.
وخصر مبتل وبتيل
And a mubtal and batīl waist.
لها ثغر مرتل، وخصر مبتل
She has a well-formed mouth, and a slender waist.
والبتلة من النخل: الودية
And al-battlah from palm trees: the young shoot.
والبتل: الحق، يقال: بتلا: أي حقا
And al-batl: truth. It is said: batlan: meaning truly.
وحلف يمينا بتلة: أي قطعها
And he swore a battlah oath: meaning a decisive one.
وتبتلت المرأة: إذا تزينت وتحسنت
And the woman tabattalat: if she adorned herself and improved her appearance.
وعزيمة منبتلة: لا ترد
And an unyielding resolve: unreturnable.
وانبتل في سيره: جد ومضى
And he embarked on his journey: he exerted himself and proceeded.
