فجئت وخصمي يعلكون نيوبهم ... كما وضعت تحت الشفار عزوز
I arrived, and my adversaries were grinding their teeth... like a wounded animal placed under knives.
وطعام عالك، وعلك ككتف: متين الممضغة
And food that is tough to chew, and 'aluk' like 'katif': tough to masticate.
والعلك، بالكسر: صمغ الصنوبر والأرزة والفستق والسرو والينبوت والبطم، وهو أجودها كاللبان يمضغ فلا ينماع
And 'ilku', with kasra: is the gum of pine, cedar, pistachio, cypress, yew, and terebinth, and it is the best of them, like frankincense that is chewed but does not dissolve.
وفي الحديث: أنه مر برجل وبرمته تفور على النار فتناول منها بضعة فلم يزل يعلكها حتى أحرم في الصلاة
And in the hadith: he passed by a man whose pot was boiling on the fire, so he took a piece of meat from it and kept chewing it until he entered the state of ihram in prayer.
وما ذاق علاكا، كغراب وسحاب: أي ما يعلك ويمضغ.
And he did not taste 'alakan', like 'ghurab' and 'suhab': meaning, what is chewed and masticated.
وعلك القربة تعليكا: أجاد دبغها
And he tanned the waterskin 'ta'likan': meaning, he tanned it well.
