The palate, with harakah, of a human and an animal: the inner part of the upper mouth from the inside.

The passing groups left nothing in our land.
إنا وكنا حنكا نجديا لما انتجعنا الورق المرعيا
Indeed, we were a Najdi group when we sought the grazing foliage.

And 'hanakahu tahnika': he rubbed his palate until it bled.
أن تحنك الدابة تغرز عودا في حنكه الأعلى أو طرف قرن حتى تدميه لحدث يحدث فيه
To make the animal's palate bleed by inserting a stick into its upper palate or the tip of a horn until it bleeds for an event occurring in it.

حنك الشيء حنكا: إذا فهمه وأحكمه كلقفه لقفا
To master something 'hanakan': if he understood it and mastered it, like grasping it quickly.
حنك الصبي يحنكه حنكا: إذا مضغ تمرا أو غيره فدلكه بحنكه، كحنكه تحنيكا
To give a baby a taste 'hanakahu hanakan': if he chewed a date or something else and rubbed it with his palate, like 'hanakahu tahnika'.
فمضغ له تمرا وحنكه، وكان صلى الله عليه وسلم يحنك أولاد الأنصار فهو محنوك ومحنك لغتان
So he chewed a date for him and gave it to him, and the Prophet, peace be upon him, used to give dates to the children of the Ansar, so he is 'mahnuk' and 'muhannak' are two languages.
حنكت السن الرجل: إذا أحكمته التجارب حنكا بالفتح ويحرك وكذلك حنكته الأمور حنكا
The tooth 'hanakat' the man: if experiences made him skilled 'hanakan' (with fathah) and moved, and likewise matters made him skilled 'hanakan'.
أي: فعلت به ما يفعل بالفرس إذا حنك حتى عاد مجربا مذللا فاحتنك كحنكته تحنيكا وأحنكته كلاهما عن الزجاج
Meaning: it did to him what is done to a horse when it is trained until it becomes experienced and submissive, so 'ihtanaka' like 'hanakatuhu tahnika' and 'ahnakatuhu', both from Al-Zajjaj.
والاسم الحنكة والحنك، بضمهما ويكسر الثاني عن الليث، وهو السن والتجربة والبصر بالأمور
And the noun is 'al-hanakah' and 'al-hunk', with both having dammah and the second with kasrah, from Al-Layth, and it is age, experience, and insight into matters.
وحنكته السن: إذا نبتت أسنانه التي تسمى أسنان العقل
And the tooth 'hanakatuhu': if his teeth, called the wisdom teeth, grew.

He made the two camels more voracious and made the two sheep more voracious, meaning the stronger of them in eating, and this is a rare anomaly because 'ma af'ala' is not used for natural disposition.

احتـنك الجراد الأرض: إذا أكل ما عليها من النبت
The locusts 'ihtanakū' the land: if they ate what was on it of vegetation.
استولى بحنكه عليها، فأكلها واستأصلها
He took control of it with his palate, so he ate it and eradicated it.
أي: لأستأصلنهم، ولأستميلنهم
Meaning: I will surely eradicate them, and I will surely win them over.
احتـنكه فلانا: إذا أخذ ماله كله، كأنه أكله بالحنك
'Ihtanakahu fulanan': if he took all his money, as if he ate it with his palate.
احتـنك فلانا ما عند فلان، أي: أخذه كله
'Ihtanaka fulanan ma 'inda fulan': meaning: he took all that was with so-and-so.
احتـنك الجراد الأرض هو من الحنك، وقد أريد به الفم والمنقار، فهو اشتقاق من اسم عين
