ضمه وجمعه وحمله.
It means to gather, collect, and carry it.
وبالليل وما وسق
And by the night and what it gathers.
أي وما جمع وضم، قاله الفراء.
Meaning what it gathers and collects, according to Al-Farra'.
أي وما جمع من الجبال والبحار والأشجار، كأنه جمعها بأن طلع عليها كلها، فإذا جلل الليل الجبال والأشجار والبحار والأرض فاجتمعت له فقد وسقها.
Meaning what it gathers of mountains, seas, and trees, as if it gathered them by rising over all of them. When night covers the mountains, trees, seas, and land, and they gather for it, it has gathered them.
كقابض ماء لم تسقه أنامله
Like one grasping water that his fingertips could not hold.
أي: لم تحمله.
Meaning: he did not carry it.
وسقه يسقه وسقا: طرده.
And 'wasqahu' (he drove it) means to drive it away.
وهي من الإبل والحمير كالرفقة من الناس، وقد وسقها وسقا فإذا سرقت طردت معا.
And it (al-wasiqa) is of camels and donkeys like a 'rafqa' (group) of people. And he drove them ('wasqaha') with a driving, and if they were stolen, they were driven together.
كما قاف آثار الوسيقة قائف
Like a tracker tracking the traces of the driven herd.
سميت وسيقة لأن طاردها يجمعها ولا يدعها تنتشر عليه، فيلحقها الطلب فيردها.
It is called 'wasiqa' because its driver gathers it and does not let it scatter, so pursuit catches up and returns it.
وهذا كما قيل للسائق: قابض لأن السائق إذا ساق قطيعا من الإبل قبضها أي: جمعها لئلا يتعذر عليه سوقها، ولأنها إذا انتشرت عليه لم تتتابع، ولم تطرد على صوب واحد.
And this is like saying to the driver: 'qabid' (gatherer) because when the driver drives a herd of camels, he 'qabada' (gathers) them, meaning he collects them so that driving them is not difficult, and because if they scatter, they do not follow in succession or drive in one direction.
وسقت الناقة وغيرها وسقا ووسوقا: حملت وأغلقت على الماء رحمها، فهي ناقة واسق من نوق وساق بالكسر، مثل نائم ونيام، وصاحب وصحاب.
And 'wasqat' (she carried) the she-camel and others means she carried and closed her womb to water, so she is a pregnant she-camel among pregnant she-camels, like 'na'im' and 'niyam', and 'sahib' and 'sahab'.
ألظ بهن يحدوهن حتى ... تبينت الحيال من الوساق
He urged them on until ... the tricks became clear from the pregnant ones.
لا آتيك ما وسقت العين الماء أي: ما حملته.
I will not come to you as long as the eye carries water, meaning: what it holds.
الوسيق كأمير: السوق.
Al-wasiq, like 'amir', means the market.
قربها ولم تكد تقرب من آل نسيان وسيق أجدب
He brought her near, and she almost did not approach the people of Nisyān, a barren market.
الوسيق: المطر لأن السحاب يسقه أي يطرده.
Al-wasiq: rain, because the clouds drive it, meaning they propel it.
وهو مكيلة معلومة، وهو ستون صاعا بصاع النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، وهو خمسة أرطال وثلث.
And it is a known measure, which is sixty sa's by the sa' of the Prophet, peace be upon him, which is five and a third pounds.
كل وسق بالملجم ثلاثة أقفزة.
Every wasq, by the Miljam measure, is three aqfiza.
ستون صاعا: أربعة وعشرون مكوكا بالملجم، وذلك ثلاثة أقفزة.
Sixty sa's: twenty-four makkuks by the Miljam, and that is three aqfiza.
الوسق بالفتح: ستون صاعا وهو ثلثمائة وعشرون رطلا عند أهل الحجاز، وأربعمائة وثمانون رطلا عند أهل العراق على اختلافهم في مقدار الصاع والمد.
Al-wasq, with fatha, is sixty sa's, which is three hundred and twenty pounds among the people of Hijaz, and four hundred and eighty pounds among the people of Iraq, with their differences in the measure of the sa' and mud.
ما حمل البختي عام غياره ... عليه الوسوق برها وشعيرها
What the Bactrian camel carried in the year of its drought ... its wheat and barley, the loads of it.
ليس فيما دون خمسة أوسق من التمر صدقة.
There is no charity on less than five wasqs of dates.
خمسة أوسق هي ثلثمائة صاع وكذلك قال الحسن وابن المسيب.
Five wasqs are three hundred sa's, and thus said Al-Hasan and Ibn Al-Musayyib.
الوسق: حمل البعير، والوقر: حمل البغل أو الحمار، هذا قول الخليل.
Al-wasq: the load of a camel, and al-waqr: the load of a mule or donkey, this is the saying of Al-Khalil.
الوسق: العدل، وقيل: العدلان، وقيل: الحمل عامة.
Al-wasq: a pair of loads, or two pairs, or a general load.
الوسق: ستون صاعا، وهو حمل بعير، وأنشد غيره: أين الشظاظان وأين المربعه وأين وسق الناقة الجلنفعه
Al-wasq: sixty sa's, and it is the load of a camel. Others recited: Where are the two straps and where is the saddle-pad, and where is the load of the large she-camel?
وسق الحنطة توسيقا: جعلها، وفي بعض نسخ الصحاح: حملها وسقا وسقا.
And 'wassaqa' (he loaded) the wheat means to make it, and in some copies of Al-Sihah: to load it with a wasq, wasq.
وأوسق البعير: أوقره، وفي الصحاح: حمله حمله.
And 'awsaga' the camel means to load it heavily, and in Al-Sihah: to load its load.
وسقت النخلة: إذا حملت، فإذا كثر حملها فقد أوسقت، أي: حملت وسقا.
And 'wasqat' the date palm means when it bears fruit. If its yield is abundant, it has 'awsagat', meaning it has borne a wasq.
يوم أرزاق من يفضل عم ... موسقات وحفل أبكار
A day of provisions from whom the uncle excels... heavily laden, and pregnant young ones.
استوسقت الإبل أي اجتمعت.
And 'istawsāqat' the camels means they gathered together.
إن لنا قلائصا حقائقا ... مستوسقات لو يجدن سائقا
Indeed, we have young she-camels, true... gathered together, if they found a driver.
اتسق أمره، أي: انتظم.
His affair became 'attasaqa', meaning it became orderly.
واسقه مواسقة، ووساقا: عارضه فكان مثله ولم يكن دون.
And 'wāsaqahu' (he matched him) with 'muwāsaqatan' and 'wisāqan': he confronted him and was his equal and not inferior.
فلست إن جاريتني ... مواسقي
You will not be, if you compete with me... my equal.
واسقه أيضا: إذا ناهده مواسقة، ووساقا.
And 'wāsaqahu' also means: if he challenged him, with 'muwāsaqatan' and 'wisāqan'.
وندامى لا يبخلون بما نا ... لوا ولا يعسرون عند الوساق
And companions who do not withhold what they offer, nor are they difficult at the time of confrontation.
الميساق: الطائر الذي يصفق بجناحيه إذا طار، ج: مياسيق، هكذا نقله الجوهري.
Al-mīsāq: the bird that flaps its wings when it flies, plural: mayāsīq, thus transmitted by Al-Jawhari.
هكذا سمعته بالهمز.
Thus I heard it with hamza.
الوسق، بالفتح لا غير: وقر النخلة، نقله ابن بري عن أبي عبيد، ذكره في باب طلع النخل.
Al-wasq, with fatha only: the yield of a date palm, transmitted by Ibn Barrī from Abū 'Ubayd, mentioned in the chapter on date palm blossoms.
يقال: حملت وسقا، أي: وقرا، زاد شمر: وهي لغة العرب، والجمع الأوساق والوسوق.
It is said: she carried a wasq, meaning a load. Shammir added: and it is an Arabic usage, and the plural is al-awsāq and al-wusūq.
وقد وسقت وسقا، أي: حملت وقرا.
And she has 'wasqat' a wasq, meaning she carried a load.
وسقت الأتان: حملت ولدا في بطنها، وكذلك الشاة.
And 'wasqat' the female donkey means she carried a child in her womb, and likewise the ewe.
والميساق من الحمام: الوافر الجناح، وقيل: هو على التشبيه، جعلوا جناحيه له كالوسق، جمعه: مآسيق بالهمز.
And al-mīsāq of pigeons: the one with abundant wings. It is said: it is by analogy, they made its wings like a 'wasq', its plural: 'mā'āsīq' with hamza.
وكل ما انضم فقد اتسق.
And everything that joins together has become complete.
والطريق يأتسق، ويتسق، أي: ينضم، حكاه الكسائي.
And the road becomes 'ya'tasiqu' and 'yattasiq', meaning it joins, narrated by Al-Kisa'i.
والقمر إذا اتسق
And the moon when it is complete.
أي: استوى.
Meaning: it became full.
واتساق القمر: امتلاؤه واجتماعه واستواؤه ليلة ثلاث عشرة وأربع عشرة.
And the 'ittisāq' of the moon: its fullness, its gathering, and its completeness on the thirteenth and fourteenth night.
من أسماء القمر: الوباص، والطوس، والمتسق، والجلم، والزبرقان، والسنمار.
Among the names of the moon: al-wabāṣ, al-ṭaws, al-mutassaq, al-jalam, al-zuburqān, and al-sinnmār.
الوسق: ضم الشيء الى الشيء.
Al-wasq: joining one thing to another.
واستوسقوا: استجمعوا وانضموا.
And 'istawsaqū': they gathered and joined together.
واستوسق عليه أمر الحبشة أي: اجتمعوا على طاعته واستقر الملك فيه.
And the affair of the Abyssinians 'istawsaqa' upon him, meaning: they gathered in obedience to him and the kingship settled in him.
وسق الإبل، فاستوسقت، أي: طردها فأطاعت، عن ابن الأعرابي.
He drove the camels, and they 'istawsaqat', meaning: he drove them and they obeyed, from Ibn Al-A'rābī.
واستوسق لك الأمر: أمكنك.
And the matter 'istawsaqa' for you, meaning: it became possible for you.
واتسقت الإبل: اجتمعت.
And the camels 'ittasaqat': they gathered.
ناقة وسيقة: حامل.
A 'wasīqa' she-camel: pregnant.
واستوسق أمره: انتظم، وهو مجاز.
And his affair 'istawsaqa': it became orderly, and this is metaphorical.
وطرد الحمار وسيقته، أي: عانته، وهو مجاز.
And he drove the donkey and its herd ('wasiqatahu'), meaning: he aided it, and this is metaphorical.
وهو لا يواسق فلانا، أي: لا يعادله، وهو مجاز.
And he does not 'yuwāsiq' so-and-so, meaning: he does not equal him, and this is metaphorical.
إن الليل لطويل ولا أسق باله، ولا أسقه بالا بالرفع والجزم من قولك: وسق: إذا جمع، أي: وكلت بجمع الهموم فيه.
Indeed, the night is long, and I do not gather its worries into my mind, nor do I gather them (using 'asqu' with indicative and jussive moods from 'wasq': to gather), meaning: I am burdened with gathering worries in it.
معناه لا يجتمع له أمره، قال: وهو دعاء.
Its meaning is that his affairs do not come together. He said: and it is a supplication.
فرس معتاق الوسيقة، وهو الذي إذا طرد عليه طريدة أنجاها، وسبق بها، وأنشد:
A horse that outruns the prey ('mu'tāq al-wasīqa'), which is one that if prey is driven before it, it catches it and outruns it, and he recited:
ألم أظلف عن الشعراء عرضي ... كما ظلف الوسيقة بالكراع
Have I not protected my honor from the poets... like the one who outran the prey with his legs?
