قال الفراء: لغة أهل الحجاز عميق.

Al-Farra' said: The dialect of the people of Hijaz is 'amīq.

وبنو تميم يقولون: معيق.

And Banu Tamim say: mu'īq.

قال مجاهد: أي من كل طريق بعيد، وقال الليث: العميق أكثر من المعيق في الطريق، أو طويل

Mujahid said: meaning from every distant road, and Al-Layth said: Al-'amīq is more than Al-Mu'īq in the road, or long.

والعمق: ما بعد من أطراف المفازة البعيدة ويضم، ج: أعماق

And Al-'umq: what is distant from the edges of the remote desert, and it is pronounced with dammah, plural: A'māq.

وقاتم الأعماق خاوي المخترق مشتبه الأعلام لماع الخفق

And dark depths, empty of passage, with indistinguishable landmarks, flashing of the heart.

في سبسب منجرد الأخلاق غير الفجاج عمق الأعماق

In a barren plain, stripped of its features, not the passes, the depth of the depths.

والعمق: البسر الموضوع في الشمس ليجف وينضج، عن أبي حنيفة

And Al-'umq: A valley in Ta'if, which the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, descended when he besieged it, and in it is a well whose rope is not longer in Ta'if than it.

والعمقى: أرض قتل بها صاحب أبي ذؤيب الهذلي الذي رثاه بقوله:

And Al-'umqá: a land where the companion of Abu Dhu'ayb Al-Hudhali, whom he eulogized with his saying, was killed:

لما ذكرت أخا العمقى تأوبني ... هم وأفرد ظهري الأغلب الشيح

When I remembered the brother of Al-'umqá, sorrow overcame me... and the dominant wormwood isolated my back.

والعمقة، محركة: وضر السمن في النحي عن اللحياني.

And Al-'umqah, harrakah: the residue of ghee in the skin bag, from Al-Lahyani.

يقال: ما في النحي عمقة ولا عيقة، أي: لطخ ولا وضر، ولا لعوق من رب ولا سمن.

It is said: There is no 'umqah nor 'aiqah in the skin bag, meaning: no smear, no residue, and no lick of curd or ghee.

وله فيه عمق، محركة أي: حق عن ابن شميل.

And he has in it 'umqah, harrakah, meaning: a right, from Ibn Shumayl.

أعمق البئر، وأمعقها، وعمقها تعميقا، واعتمقها

He deepened the well, and made it deep, and deepened it with deepening, and he deepened it.

جعلها عميقة أي: بعيدة القعر.

He made it deep, meaning: far in depth.

وعمق النظر في الأمور تعميقا: بالغ فيها.

And he deepened his النظر in matters with deepening: he exaggerated in them.

وتعمق في كلامه أي: تنطع، نقله الجوهري.
