عسق به، كفرح عسقا: لصق به ولزمه.
He stuck to it, like 'faraha', with 'asqan': he adhered to it and clung to it.
ويقال: عسق عليه جعل فلان: إذا ألح عليه فيما يطلبه به
It is also said: 'asqa' 'alayhi' means so-and-so became insistent with him: if he persisted with him in what he demanded.
وفي اللسان: فيما يطالبه كتعسق به في الكل.
And in Al-Lisan: in what he demands of him, like his persistent clinging to him in all matters.
قال رؤبة: إلفا وحبا طالما تعسقا
Ru'bah said: as companions and beloved ones, for a long time they clung to each other.
وعسقت الناقة على الفحل ونص الخليل فيما نقله الجوهري بالفحل: إذا أربت عليه، وكذلك الحمار بالأتان.
And the she-camel 'asqat' upon the male camel, and Al-Khalil stated in what Al-Jawhari transmitted regarding the male camel: if she became pregnant by him, and likewise the male donkey with the female donkey.
قال رؤبة: فعف عن أسرارها بعد العسق
Ru'bah said: so he refrained from her secrets after the clinging/infatuation.
ولم يضعها بين فرك وعشق
And he did not place her between dislike and passionate love.
والعسق محركة: الالتواء وعسر الخلق وضيقه.
And 'al-'asq' (vowelized): is crookedness, difficulty of disposition, and its narrowness.
يقال: في خلقه عسق: أي التواء، هذا إذا وصف بسوء الخلق وضيق المعاملة.
It is said: 'fi khalqihi 'asq': meaning crookedness; this is when he is described with bad character and narrowness in dealings.
والعسق: الظلمة مثل الغسق عن ثعلب
And 'al-'asq': is darkness, like 'al-ghasaq', according to Tha'lab.
إنا لنسمو للعدو حنقا بالخيل أكداسا تثير عسقا
We certainly charge at the enemy in anger with cavalry, in masses, stirring up darkness (of dust).
كنا بالعسق عن ظلمة الغبار.
He alluded by 'al-'asq' to the darkness of the dust.
والعسق: العرجون الرديء قاله الليث، وهي لغة بني أسد.
And 'al-'asq': is the inferior date cluster, said Al-Layth, and it is a dialect of Banu Asad.

And Abu Hanifa said 'al-'usayqah', like 'safinah': is a bad drink with a lot of water.
فأما قول سحيم: (فلو كنت وردا لونه لعسقنني ... ولكن ربي شانني بسواديا)
As for the saying of Suhaim: (If you were rose-colored, they would have clung to me with passion... But my Lord has distinguished me with blackness)
إنما قلب الشين سينا لسواده، وضعف عبارته عن الشين، وليس ذلك بلغة، إنما) هو كاللثغ.
He only changed the 'sh' to 's' because of its blackness, and his expression of 'sh' was weak, and that is not a dialect, it is like a lisp.
والعجب منه كونه لم يعتذر عن سائر كلماته بالشين، وعن شانني في البيت نفسه، أو يجعلها من عسق به، أي: لزمه.
And the wonder from him is that he did not apologize for his other words with 'sh', and for 'shanani' in the verse itself, or make it from 'asqa bihi', meaning: it clung to him.
فأراد أن يعلم أنه لم يقصد هذا المعنى، وإنما هو قصد العشق لا غير، وإنما عجمته وسواده أنطقاه بالسين في موضع الشين، والله أعلم.
So he wanted to make it known that he did not intend this meaning, but rather he intended passionate love and nothing else, and it was his foreignness and his blackness that made him pronounce 's' in place of 'sh', and God knows best.
