فطفق مسحا بالسوق والأعناق
So he began to pass [his hand] over the legs and necks.
أراد: طفق يمسح مسحا.
He meant: Tafiq to wipe a wiping.
طفق يفعل كذا: إذا شرع في فعل واستمر فيه.
Tafiq to do such-and-such: if he embarked on an action and continued in it.
خاص بالإثبات يقال: طفق يفعل كذا، ولا يقال: ما طفق يفعل كذا وكذا.
It is specific to affirmation; it is said: Tafiq to do such-and-such, and it is not said: Ma tafiq to do such-and-such.
طفق فلان بمراده: إذا ظفر.
Tafiq so-and-so with his desire: if he succeeded.
وأطفقه الله به أي: أظفره به، ولئن أطفقني الله به لأفعلن به.
And Allah made him victorious over it, meaning: He made him victorious over it, and if Allah makes me victorious over it, I will do such-and-such to him.
وطفق الموضع، كفرح: إذا لزمه، نقله ابن سيده.
