Parallel reading
الصعفوق بالفتح: اللئيم من الرجال، قاله الليث.
Al-ṣuʿfūq (with fatḥa): the base man, so said Al-Layth.
وصعفوق: ة، باليمامة فيها قناة يجري منها نهر كبير لهم فيها وقعة، ويقال: صعفوقة بالهاء.
And Ṣuʿfūq is a place in Al-Yamamah, in which there is a channel from which a large river flows; they had a battle there, and it is also called Ṣuʿfūqah (with ḥāʾ).
وليس في الكلام فعلول سواه.
And there is no word in the language following the pattern fa'alūl except it.
قال الحسين بن إبراهيم النطنزي في كتابه دستور اللغة فعلول في لسان العرب مضموم، إلا حرفا واحدا، وهو صعفوق لموضع باليمامة.
Al-Ḥusayn ibn Ibrāhīm Al-Naṭanazī said in his book Dastūr al-Lughah: The pattern fa'alūl in Lisān al-'Arab is with ḍamma, except for one letter, which is Ṣuʿfūq for a place in Al-Yamamah.

وأما الفصيح فيضم خاؤه، أو يشد راؤه مع حذف النون، كما في العباب.
But the eloquent pronunciation is to put ḍamma on its khāʾ, or to double its rāʾ with the deletion of the nūn, as in Al-ʿAbbāb.
وقال شيخنا: لا يفتح خرنوب إلا إذا كان مضعفا وحذفت منه النون، فقيل: خروب، أما ما دامت فيه النون فإنه غير مسموع.
And our shaykh said: kharnūb is not pronounced with fatḥa unless it is doubled and the nūn is deleted, so it becomes kharrūb; as for when the nūn remains, it is not heard.
قال: وأما برغوث الذي حكى فيه الخليل التثليث في الكتاب الذي ألفه فيه فلا يثبت، ولا يلتفت إليه.
He said: As for barghūth, for which Al-Khalīl narrated the three pronunciations in the book he authored on it, it is not established and is not to be heeded.
وأما عصفور الذي حكى فيه الفتح الشهاب القسطلاني عن ابن رشيق فهو أيضا غير ثابت ولا موافق عليه، والله أعلم.
And as for ʿuṣfūr, for which Al-Shuhāb Al-Qasṭalānī narrated the fatḥa from Ibn Rashīq, it is also not established and not agreed upon, and God knows best.
قلت: وقال ابن بري: رأيت بخط أبي سهل الهروي على حاشية كتاب: جاء على فعلول: صعفوق، و
I say: And Ibn Barrī said: I saw in the handwriting of Abū Sahl Al-Harawī on the margin of a book: Following the pattern fa'alūl came: Ṣuʿfūq, and
