وأنشد غيره في الريح: (غير الجدة من عرفانها ... حزق الريح وطوفان المطر)

And others recited in the wind: (Not the strong wind from its familiarity... the gusts of wind and the flood of rain).

Al-Hizq, like 'atal and 'atala: the short one who approaches danger (i.e., walks with short steps).

وأنشد لجامع بن عمرو الكلابي: (حزق إذا ما القوم أبدوا فكاهة ... تذكر: آإياه يعنون، أم قردا)

And he recited for Jami' bin 'Amr al-Kilabi: (He was short when the people showed humor... they remember: do they mean him, or a monkey?)

وأعجبني مشي الحزقة خالد ... كمشي أتان حلئت بالمناهل

And I admired the walk of short Khalid... like the walk of a female donkey that is restrained at the watering places.

أو هو: من يقارب خطوه لضعف بدنه عن ابن الأنباري

Or it is: one whose steps are short due to weakness of his body, according to Ibn al-Anbari.

وبه فسر الحديث: أن النبى صلى الله عليه وسلم كان يرقص الحسن أو الحسين، ويقول: حزقة حزقه ترق عين بقه

And with this, the hadith is explained: that the Prophet, peace be upon him, used to dance with Al-Hasan or Al-Husayn, and say: 'Hazqah, hazqah, may your eye ascend, O little one.'

قال: فكان يرقى حتى يضع قدميه على صدر النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم

He said: So he would ascend until he placed his feet on the chest of the Prophet, peace be upon him.

رجل حزقة، وهو: الضيق الرأي من الرجال، والنساء

A man 'hazqah', and it is: narrow-minded among men and women.

وفي التهذيب: قال أبو تراب: سمعت شمرا وأبا سعيد يقولان: رجل حزقة، وحزمة: إذا كان قصيرا

And in Al-Tahdhib: Abu Turab said: I heard Shammar and Abu Sa'id say: A man 'hazqah', and 'hazmah': if he is short.

وقال شمر: الحزق: الضيق القدرة والرأي، الشحيح

And Shammar said: Al-Hazaq: is narrow in ability and opinion, the stingy one.

وقال أبو عبيدة: الحزقة: هو العظيم البطن، القصير الذي إذا مشى أدار أليتيه

And Abu 'Ubaydah said: Al-Hizqah: is the one with a large belly, the short one who waddles his buttocks when he walks.

والحزقة بفتح الحاء، وضم الزاي فهي أربع لغات

And al-Hizqah with fathah on the ha and dammah on the za, so it has four pronunciations.

أو: الرجل البخيل المتشدد على ما في يديه ضنا به والاسم الحزق، محركة

Or: the stingy, strict man regarding what is in his hands, hoarding it, and the noun is al-Hazaq, movable.

فهي تعادى من حزاز ذي حزق

So she is opposed because of the irritation of one who is stingy.

وهو أيضا: السيئ الخلق البخيل عن ابن الأعرابي

And it is also: the ill-tempered, stingy one, according to Ibn al-A'rabi.

وقيل: هو الضيق الأمر عن شمر

And it was said: it is one whose affairs are difficult, according to Shammar.

أو الحزقة: ضرب من اللعب أخذ من التحزق، وهو التجمع

Or al-Hizqah: is a type of game derived from al-tahazzuq, which is gathering.

ومنه حديث الشعبي: اجتمع جوار فأرن وأشرن، ولعبن الحزقة

And from it is the hadith of Al-Sha'bi: Some girls gathered, made noise and flirted, and played al-Hizqah.

وحازوق: اسم رجل خارجي رثته أي: راثيته

And Hazouq: is the name of a Kharijite man whom she mourned, meaning: I mourned him.

فجعلته امرأته حزاقا بالكسر للضرورة فإنها أرادت حازقا، أو حازوقا، فلم يستقم لها الشعر، فغيرته

So his wife made it 'Hizāqan' (with kasra) out of necessity, for she intended 'Hāziqan' or 'Hāzouqan', but it did not fit the meter of the poetry, so she changed it.

أقلب عيني في الفوارس لا أرى ... حزاقا وعيني كالحجاة من القطر

I turn my eyes among the horsemen, I see no one... Hazāqan, and my eyes are like water bubbles from the rain.

والمراد بالحجاة نفاخات الماء من شدة المطر

And what is meant by 'al-hijāh' are water bubbles from the intensity of the rain.

والحزق، بالكسر: مركب شبيه بالباصر

And al-Hazaq, with kasra: is a mount similar to al-Bāsiir.

قال: والحزاق ككتاب: السوار الغليظ

He said: And al-Hizāq, like kitāb: is the thick bracelet.

أحزقه إحزاقا: إذا منعه

He prevented him, he prevented him, meaning: if he withheld from him.

فما المال إلا سؤر حقك كله ... ولكنه عما سوى الحق محزق

And the wealth is nothing but the remainder of all your right... but it is withheld from anything other than the right.

والمتحزق: البخيل جدا

And al-Mutahazziqu: is the extremely stingy one.
