And Al-Afiq: a horse that belonged to Faqeem bin Jarir bin Darim.

So-and-so 'afaq' from the root 'ḍaraba': if he became stubborn, and went into the horizons.

و (و) أفق في العطاء أفقا، أي: فضل، وأعطى بعضا أكثر من بعض

And (he) 'afaq' in giving 'afaqan', meaning: he excelled, and gave some more than some.

ولا الملك النعمان يوم لقيته ... بنعمته يعطى القطوط ويأفق

Nor did King Al-Nu'man, the day I met him, with his bounty, give the decrees and excel.

He tanned the hide 'ya'fiquhu' 'afaqan': if he tanned it until it became 'afiqa'.

To whom belongs the dwelling that became desolate in Ma'an... between Upper Yarmouk and Al-Saman... Then Qafa Jasim, then the dwelling of Khulayd... then Afiq, and the sides of it are where they roam.

والأفيق: الجلد الذي لم يتم دباغه

And Al-Afīq: the hide whose tanning is not completed.

وقيل: هو ما يدبغ بغير القرظ والأرطي وغيرهما من أدبغة أهل نجد

And it is said: It is what is tanned without Qaraẓ and Arṭa and other tanning agents of the people of Najd.

وقيل: هو حين يخرج من الدباغ مفروغا منه، وفيه رائحته

And it is said: It is when it comes out of the tannery finished, and still has its smell.

وقد جاء ذكر الأفيقة في حديث غزوان فانطلقت إلى السوق فاشتريت أفيقة، أي سقاء من أدم

And Al-Afiqa was mentioned in the hadith of Ghuzwan: 'So I went to the market and bought an Afiqa, meaning a waterskin made of hide'.

والأفقة، محركة: الخاصرة والجمع أفق، عن ابن الأعرابي

And Al-Afqah, moved: the flank, and the plural is Afaq, from Ibn Al-A'rabi.

It watered the belly of Al-'Aqiq towards Afaq... then Fathur towards the top of the dune.

So-and-so 'ta'affaq' with us: meaning he came to us from a direction.

تأفقت: ألمت بنا، وأتتنا.

'Ta'affaqat': she visited us, and came to us.

الفاتقون الراتقون ... الآفقون على المعاشر

The openers, the closers... those surpassing others in livelihood.

وبعير آفق، وفرس آفق: إذا كان رائعا كريما

And a magnificent camel, and a magnificent horse: if it is magnificent and noble.
