The Prophet, peace be upon him, alighted at the place of Umm Ma'bad al-Khuza'iyah, may God be pleased with her, near his departure to Medina, meaning at his departure. Ibn al-Athir said: It is like saying 'hadathana' (recently) and 'sur'ana' (very recently).
ويقال: مر يودف توذيفا، ويتوذف: إذا كان يقارب الخطو، ويحرك منكبيه زاد أبو عمرو متبخترا
And it is said: He passed by walking with short steps and moving his shoulders, and 'yatawadhdhif' means to take short steps and move one's shoulders, Abu Amr added, proudly.
ومنه حديث الحجاج: ثم انطلق يتوذف حتى دخل عليها.
And from this is the hadith of Al-Hajjaj: Then he set off walking with a swagger until he entered upon her.
أو يتوذف: يسرع قاله أبو عبيدة، واستدل بقول بشر بن أبي خازم:
Or 'yatawadhdhif' means to walk quickly, said Abu Ubaidah, and he used as evidence the verse of Bishr bin Abi Khazim:
والوذاف، كغراب: الذكر لغة في الوداف بالدال.
And 'al-wadhdaf', like 'ghurab': the male organ, a variant pronunciation (with 'dh') of 'al-waddaf' (with 'd').
