And in the Hadith: Zamzam does not run dry nor is it blamed: meaning its water does not run out despite much drawing.

The well was depleted and it became depleted, for it came contrary to the usual pattern, in that you find the verb 'fa'ala' transitive, and 'af'ala' intransitive.

والاسم النزف، بالضم قال: (تغترق الطرف وهي لاهية ... كأنما شف وجهها نزف)

And the noun 'al-nazf', with dammah, he said: (It catches the eye while it is heedless... as if its face was pale from drained blood).

بئر نزوف كصبور: أي نزفت باليد وذلك إذا قل ماؤها.

A well that runs dry like 'sabur': meaning it is depleted by hand, and that is when its water is scarce.

ونزل، كعني: ذهب عقله، أو سكر، ومنه قوله تعالى: لا يصدعون عنها ولا ينزفون

And 'nazifa', as 'ani': his mind went, or he was drunk, and from this is His saying, the Almighty: They will not suffer from it exhaustion, nor intoxication.

أي لا يسكرون، وأنشد للأبيرد: (لعمري لئن أنزفتم أو صحوتم ... لبئس الندامى كنتم آل أبجرا)

Meaning they will not be intoxicated, and he recited for al-Abirad: (By my life, whether you were intoxicated or sober... you were a bad company, O Banu Abjara).

وقوم يجعلون المنزف: مثل النزيف، الذي قد نزف دمه.

And some people consider 'al-manzif' to be like 'al-nazif', one whose blood has been drained.

وأنزفها: أفنيتها، قال العجاج: وصرح ابن معمر لمن ذمر) وأنزف العبرة من لاقى العبر

And I caused it to be depleted: I made it finished, al-Ajjaj said: And Ibn Mu'ammar clarified for whoever is provoked) and he caused the tears to flow from whoever he met.

والنزفة، بالضم: القليل من الماء ونحوه مثل الغرفة ج: نزف كغرف نقله الجوهري، قال العجاج يصف الخمر: فشن في الإبريق منها نزفا من رصف نازع سيلا رصفا

And 'al-nazfah', with dammah: a small amount of water and the like, like a scoopful, plural: 'nazaf' like 'gharaf', transmitted by al-Jawhari. Al-Ajjaj said, describing wine: So pour from it a small amount into the pitcher, a flowing stream.

يقطع موضون الحديث ابتسامها ... تقطع ماء المزن في نزف الخمر

Her smile interrupts the woven speech... cutting the rainwater in the depleted wine.

وعروق نزف، كركع: غير سائلة قال العجاج يصف ثورا: أعين بربار إذا تعسفا أجوازها هذ العروق النزفا

And non-flowing veins, like 'rukk'a': not flowing. Al-Ajjaj said, describing a bull: O eyes of Barbar, when they traverse... through their middles are these non-flowing veins.

ونزل فلان دمه، كعني هكذا في سائر النسخ، وهو نص ابن دريد: سال حتى يفرط فهو منزوف، ونزيف.

And so-and-so's blood 'nazafa', as 'ani' in all other copies, and it is the text of Ibn Duraid: it flowed until it was excessive, so he is 'manzūf', and 'nazīf'.

ونزل دمه من حد ضرب نزفا، قال: وهو من المقلب الذي يعرف معناه، قال الجوهري: وذلك إذا خرج منه دم كثير حتى يضعف.

And his blood 'nazafa' from the form of 'daraba' with 'nazfan', he said: And it is from the reversed forms whose meaning is known. Al-Jawhari said: And that is when a lot of blood comes out of him until he weakens.

وفي المثل: أجبن من المنزوف ضرطا نقله الجوهري وابن دريد: وكذا: أجبن من المنزوف خضفا.

And in the proverb: More cowardly than the 'manzūf' farting, transmitted by al-Jawhari and Ibn Duraid: And likewise: More cowardly than the 'manzūf' grasping.

والمنزاف كمصباح من المعز: التي يكون لها لبن فينقطع نقله ابن عباد.

And 'al-manzāf' like 'misbah' from goats: one that has milk which then stops, transmitted by Ibn 'Abbad.

والنزيف كأمير: المحموم.

And 'al-nazīf' like 'amīr': the feverish one.

وقال أبو عمر و: النزيف:) السكران قال امرؤ القيس: (وإذ هي تمشي كمشي النزي ... ف يصرعه بالكثيب البهر)

And Abu 'Amr said: 'Al-nazīf': the drunkard. Imru' al-Qais said: (And when she walks like the walk of the drunk... it overcomes him with the overwhelming heat).

بداء تمشي مشية النزيف

With a disease, she walks the walk of the drunkard.

والنزيف أيضا: من عطش حتى يبست عروقه، وجف لسانه، كالمنزوف نقله الأزهري، ومنه قول جميل: (فلثمت فاها آخذا بقرونها ... شرب النزيف ببرد ماء الحشرج)

And 'al-nazīf' also: one suffering from thirst until his veins dry up and his tongue becomes parched, like 'al-manzūf', transmitted by al-Azhari. And from this is the saying of Jamil: (So I kissed her mouth, holding her horns... the parched one drank from the coolness of the water of the cistern).

والنزيف: سيف عكرمة بن أبي جهل، رضي الله عنه وفيه يقول: (وقبلهما أردى النزيف سميدعا ... له في سناء المجد بيت ومنصب)

And 'al-Nazif': the sword of Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl, may Allah be pleased with him. And about it, he says: (And before them, al-Nazif struck down Sumayda'... he had a house and position in the glory of eminence).

ومن المجاز: نزف الرجل، كعني: انقطعت حجته في الخصومة نقله الجوهري.

And from the figurative speech: a man 'nazafa', as 'ani': his argument was cut off in the dispute, transmitted by al-Jawhari.

ونزل الرجل: سكر ومنه قراءة الكوفيين غير عاصم في الصافات: ولا هم عنها ينزفون بكسر الزاي، وقراءة الكوفيين في الواقعة ولا ينزفون كذلك

And a man 'anzafa': he became drunk. And from this is the reading of the Kufans, other than 'Asim, in Al-Saffat: 'and they will not be intoxicated from it' (with kasrah of the zay), and the reading of the Kufans in Al-Waqi'ah: 'and they will not be intoxicated' (likewise).

وأنزف الرجل: ذهب ماء بئره بالنزح وانقطع، نقله الجوهري.

And a man 'anzafa': the water of his well ran out by drawing and stopped, transmitted by al-Jawhari.

أو أنزف: ذهب ماء عينه بالبكاء.

Or 'anzafa': the water of his eye went with crying.

وقال الفراء: أنزف الرجل: إذا فني خمره وبه فسرت الآية: أي خمر أهل الجنة دائمة لا تفنى، وعبارته: ويقال: أنزف القوم: انقطع شرابهم، وقريء: ولا ينزفون بكسر الزاي.

And al-Fara' said: A man 'anzafa': if his wine runs out. And by this the verse is interpreted: meaning the wine of the people of Paradise is perpetual and does not run out. And his wording: And it is said: A people 'anzafu': their drink ran out, and it was read: 'and they will not be intoxicated' (with kasrah of the zay).

وقال أبو زيد: نزفت المرأة تنزيفا: إذا رأت دما على حملها وذل: مما يزيد الولد صغرا وضعفا، وحملها طولا.

And Abu Zayd said: A woman 'tanazzafat' 'tanzifan': if she sees blood during her pregnancy, and it is a sign of weakness: which increases the child's smallness and weakness, and lengthens her pregnancy.

بئر نزيف: قليلة الماء.

A 'nazīf' well: having little water.

ونزهه الحجام ينزفه وينزفه: أخرج دمه كله.

And the cupper 'nazafa' him, he 'nazafa' and 'nazafa' him: he extracted all his blood.
