And Al-Layth said: Al-Najaf occurs in the middle of a valley, similar to the Najaf of the Ghubayt, which is a wall not a boundary, wide and long, yielding, between crooked and straight, not reached by water, and it may be in the belly of the land, plural: Najaf, with kasr.
أو هي أي: النجاف: أرض مستديرة مشرفة على ما حولها الواحدة نجفة
Or it, meaning Al-Najaf: is a circular land overlooking its surroundings, the singular is Najfah.
وقيل: النجاف: شعاب الحرة التي يسكب فيها، يقال: أصابنا مطر أسال النجاف.
And it was said: Al-Najaf: are the ravines of the lava field into which water flows. It is said: Rain fell on us and flowed through Al-Najaf.
وقال ابن الأعرابي: النجف محركة: التل وقال غيره: شبه التل.
And Ibn Al-A'rabi said: Al-Najaf, vocalized with fath: is a hill, and others said: like a hill.
وقال ابن دريد: النجفة بهاء: ع، بين البصرة والبحرين
And Ibn Duraid said: Al-Najfah, with damma: a city, between Basra and Bahrain.
وقال ابن الأعرابي: النجفة: المسناة.
And Ibn Al-A'rabi said: Al-Najfah: the embankment.
وقال الأزهري: النجفة: مسناة بظاهر الكوفة تمنع ماء السيل أن يعلو مقابرها ومنازلها.
And Al-Azhari said: Al-Najfah: an embankment on the outskirts of Kufa that prevents floodwater from reaching its cemeteries and dwellings.
وقال أبو العلاء الفرضي: النجف: قرية على باب الكوفة
And Abu Al-Ala Al-Faradi said: Al-Najaf: a village at the gate of Kufa.
وقال السهيلي: بالفرع عينان، يقال لإحداهما الغريض، وللأخرى النجف، يسقيان عشرين ألف نخلة، وهو بظهر الكوفة كالمسناة
And Al-Suhayli said: In Al-Far', there are two springs, one is called Al-Gharidh, and the other Al-Najaf, watering twenty thousand palm trees, and it is on the outskirts of Kufa like an embankment.
ونجفة الثيب محركة: الموضع الذي تصفقه الرياح فتنجفه، فيصير كأنه جرف منجرف وهو الذي يحفر في عرضه، وهو غير مضروح
And the Najfah of a she-camel, vocalized with fath: the place that the winds strike and erode it, so it becomes like a eroded cliff, and it is what is dug across its width, and it is not a trench.
وفي الصحاح: يقال لإبط الكثيب: نجفة الكثيب.
And in Al-Sihah: The base of a sand dune is called the Najfah of the dune.
والنجاف، ككتاب: المدرعة قاله الفراء.
And Al-Najaf, like Kitab: the breastplate, said Al-Farra.
وقال الأصمعي: النجاف العتبة، وهي أسكفة الباب نقله الجوهري.
And Al-Asma'i said: Al-Najaf is the threshold, which is the door sill, narrated by Al-Jawhari.
أو النجاف: ما يستقبل الباب من أعلى الأسكفة ويسمى أيضا: الدوارة، عن ابني شميل.
Or Al-Najaf: what faces the door from the top of the sill, and it is also called Al-Dawwarah, from the two sons of Shimayl.
أو النجاف: دروند الباب ويسمى أيضا النجران، عن ابن الأعرابي، قال الأزهري: يعني أعلاه.
Or Al-Najaf: the door frame, and it is also called Al-Najran, from Ibn Al-A'rabi, Al-Azhari said: meaning its top part.
وقال الليث: النجاف: جلد، أو خرقة يشد بين بطن التيس وقضيبه، فلا يقدر على السفاد ومنه المثل: لا تخونك اليمانية ما أقام نجافها.
And Al-Layth said: Al-Najaf: a skin or cloth tied between the belly of a male goat and its penis, so it cannot mate, and from it is the saying: Your right hand will not betray you as long as its Najaf is in place.
وفي الصحاح: نجاف التيس: أن يربط قضيبه إلى رجله، أو إلى ظهره، وذلك إذا أكثر الضراب، يمنع بذلك منه، تقول. منه: تيس منجوف قال أبو الغوث: يعصب قضيبه، فلا يقدر على السفاد
And in Al-Sihah: The Najaf of a male goat is to tie its penis to its leg, or to its back, and that is if it mates excessively, to prevent it from doing so. You say of it: a Manjuf goat. Abu Al-Ghawth said: its penis is tied, so it cannot mate.
وقال ابن سيده: النجاف: كساء يشد على بطن العتود لئلا ينزو، وعتود منجوف، قال: ولا أعرف له فعلا.
And Ibn Al-Sideh said: Al-Najaf: a cloth tied around the belly of a young male goat so it does not mount, and a Manjuf young goat. He said: And I do not know a verb for it.
وقال ابن الأعرابي: أنجف الرجل: علقه أي: النجاف عليه أي: على التيس، ولكنه فسر النجاف بشمال الشاة الذي يعلق على ضرعها، ولذا قال الصاغاني: على الشاة.
And Ibn Al-A'rabi said: Anjafa the man: means he hung it, i.e., the Najaf on it, i.e., on the male goat, but he interpreted Al-Najaf as the teat of the ewe which is hung on its udder, and therefore Al-Sagani said: on the ewe.
وسويد بن منجوف السدوسي أبو المنهال، والد علي أبي سويد: تابعي عداده في أهل البصرة، رأى علي بن أبي طالب، روى عنه المسييب ابن رافع، كذا في الثقات لابن حبان.
And Suwayd bin Manjuf Al-Sadusi, Abu Al-Minhal, father of Ali Abu Suwayd: a Tabi'i, counted among the people of Basra, he saw Ali bin Abi Talib, and Al-Musayyib bin Rafi' narrated from him, as in Al-Thiqaat by Ibn Hibban.
قلت: ومن ولده أحمد بن عبد الله ابن علي بن سويد القطان، ويعرف بالمنجوفي، نسبة إلى جده، وهو من مشايخ البخاري في الصحيح، مات سنة.
I say: And among his descendants is Ahmad bin Abdullah bin Ali bin Suwayd Al-Qattan, known as Al-Manjufi, attributed to his grandfather, and he is one of Al-Bukhari's teachers in Al-Sahih, he died in the year.
والمنجوف، والنجيف: سهم عريض النصل، ج: نجف، ككتب نقله الجوهري عن الأصمعي، وأنشد لأبي كبير الهذلي:
And Al-Manjuf, and Al-Najif: an arrow with a broad arrowhead, plural: Najaf, like Kutub, narrated by Al-Jawhari from Al-Asma'i, and he recited for Abu Kabir Al-Hudhali:
نجفا بذلت لها خوافي ناهض ... حشر القوادم كاللفاع الأطحل
A broad-tipped arrow I offered it, its primary feathers spread... its forewings gathered like a thick cloak.
وقال أبو حنيفة: سهم نجيف: هو العريض الواسع الجرح.
And Abu Hanifa said: A Najif arrow: is one that causes a wide wound.
ونجفه ينجفه نجفا: براه وعرضه.
And he Najafahu, Yunjifuhu, Najfan: he shaped it and widened it.
وقال ابن الأعرابي: نجف الشاة ينجفها نجفا: حلبها حلبا جيدا، حتى أنفض الضرع قال الراجز يصف ناقة غزيرة:
And Ibn Al-A'rabi said: Najafa the sheep, Yanjifuha, Najfan: he milked it well, until the udder was emptied. A poet describing a very productive she-camel:
تصف أو ترمي على الصفوف إذا أتاها الحالب النجوف
It flows or pours onto the rows when the thorough milker comes to it.
وقال ابن عباد: نجف الشجرة من أصلها: أي قطعها.
And Ibn Abbad said: Najafa the tree from its roots: meaning he cut it down.
ويقال: غار منجوف أي: موسع نقله الجوهري، وأنشد لأبي زبيد يرثي عثمان رضي الله عنه:
And it is said: a Manjuf cave, meaning widened, narrated by Al-Jawhari, and he recited for Abu Zubayd mourning Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him:
إن كان مأوى وفود الناس راح به ... رهط إلى جدث كالغار منجوف
If the place of refuge for the people's delegations has departed with them... a group to a grave like a widened cave.
وقال ابن عباد: النجف، ككتب: الأخلاق من الشنان والجلود.
And Ibn Abbad said: Al-Najaf, like Kutub: morals from the hides and skins.
وأيضا: جمع نجيف من السهام، وهذا قد تقدم، فهو تكرار.
And also: plural of Najif from arrows, and this has been mentioned before, so it is a repetition.
والمنجوف: الجبان عن ابن عباد.
And Al-Manjuf: the coward, from Ibn Abbad.
والمنجوف: المنقطع عن النكاح عن ابن فارس.
And Al-Manjuf: one who is cut off from mating, from Ibn Faris.
والمنجوف من الآنية: الواسع الشحوة والجوف يقال قدح منجوف، نقله ابن عباد.
And Al-Manjuf from vessels: wide in its opening and interior, it is said a Manjuf cup, narrated by Ibn Abbad.
وفي المحكم: إناء منجوف: واسع الأسفل، وقدح منجوف: واسع الجوف، ورواه أبو عبيد: منجوب بالباء، قال ابن سيده: وهذا خطأ، إنما المنجوب: المدبوغ بالنجب.
And in Al-Muhkam: a Manjuf vessel: wide at the bottom, and a Manjuf cup: wide in its interior. Abu Ubayd narrated it: Manjub with ba', Ibn Al-Sideh said: And this is an error, for Al-Manjub is what is tanned with Al-Najb.
والنجفة بالضم: القليل من الشيء عن ابن عباد.
And Al-Najfah, with damma: a small amount of something, from Ibn Abbad.
وقال ابن الأعرابي: المنجف والمجفن كمنبر: الزبيل زاد اللحياني: ولا يقال: منجفة.
And Ibn Al-A'rabi said: Al-Manjaf and Al-Mujaffan, like Minbar: the basket. Al-Lihyani added: And it is not said: Manjafah.
ونجفت الريح الكثيب تنجيفا: جرفته.
And the wind Najafah the dune, Tunjeefan: it eroded it.
وقال ابن عباد: يقال: نجف له نجفة من اللبن: أي اعزل له قليلا منه.
And Ibn Abbad said: It is said: Najafa for him a Najfah of milk: meaning set aside a little of it for him.
وانتجفه: استخرجه نقله الجوهري.
And Intajafahu: he extracted it, narrated by Al-Jawhari.
وانتجف غنمه: استخرج أقصى ما في ضرعها من اللبن.
And Intajafa his sheep: he extracted the maximum milk from their udders.
وانتجفت الريح السحاب: استفرغته وأنشد ابن بري للشاعر يصف سحابا:
And the wind Intajafat the clouds: it emptied them. And Ibn Al-Bari recited for a poet describing clouds:
مرته الصبا ورفته الجنو ... ب وانتجفته الشمال انتجافا
The east wind passed it and the south wind blew it... and the north wind extracted it completely.
كاستنجفته وهذه عن الصاغاني.
Like Istanjafahu, and this is from Al-Sagani.
ومما يستدرك عليه: نجفه تنجيفا: رفعه، ومن ذلك حديث عائشة رضي الله عنها: أن حسان بن ثابت دخل عليها فأكرمته ونجفته.
And among what is to be added: Najafahu, Tunjeefan: he raised it. And from this is the hadith of Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her: That Hassan bin Thabit entered upon her, so she honored him and raised him.
ويقال: جلس على منجاف السفينة، قيل: هو سكانها الذي تعدل به، سمي به لارتفاعه، وقيل: منجافا السفينة جانباها، وقال الخطابي: لم أسمع فيه شيئا اعتمده.
And it is said: he sat on the Manjaf of the ship. It was said: it is its helm by which it is steered, named for its height. And it was said: The Manjaf of the ship are its sides. And Al-Khattabi said: I have not heard anything reliable about it.
والنجاف، بالكسر: الباب، والغار ونحوهما.
And Al-Najaf, with kasr: the door, and the cave, and the like.
والمنجوف: المحفور من القبور عرضا غير مضرح، وقيل: هو المحفور أي حفر كان، وقد نجفه نجفا: حفره كذلك.
And Al-Manjuf: the excavated grave, dug horizontally and not vertically. And it was said: it is the excavated, whatever the excavation was. And he Najafahu, Najfan: he dug it thus.
وعلى بابه نجاف، بالكسر، وهو ما بني ناتئا فوق الباب مشرفا عليه، كنجاف الغار، وهي صخرة ناتئة تشرف عليه، كما في) الأساس.
And above its door is a Najaf, with kasr, which is what is built projecting above the door, overlooking it, like the Najaf of a cave, which is a projecting rock overlooking it, as in Al-Asas.
والنجف، والتنجيف: التعريض، وكل ما عرض فقد نجف.
And Al-Najaf, and Al-Tanjeef: broadening, and everything that is broad has been Najafa.
ونجف القدح نجفا: براه.
And he Najafa the cup, Najfan: he shaped it.
والرماح المنجوفة، من نجفت، أي حفرت، أو من نجفت العنز: شددتها بالنجاف، أورده السهيلي في الروض.
And the Manjuf spears, from Najafata, meaning dug, or from Najafata the goat: you tied it with the Najaf. Al-Suhayli mentioned it in Al-Rawd.
