And it is said: 'He took him by the nape of his neck (qawf raqabatihi) and its nape (qufatuhā), with dammah on both. Al-Jawhari limited himself to the first, like 'sūfuhā' (its wool). And 'tawfuhā' thus in the copies, and the correct is 'wa ṣūfatuhā', meaning by his entire neck, as in Al-Sihah. And it was said: 'He takes him by the neck and squeezes it'.

نجوت بقوف نفسك غير أني إخال بأن سييتم أو تئيم

I escaped with your life, except that I think your son will be orphaned or your wife widowed.

والقاف: حرف هجاء، وهو مجهور، ويكون أصلا لا بدلا ولا زائدا

And Al-Qaf: a letter of the alphabet, and it is voiced, and it is an original, not a substitute or an addition.

قضينا أن ألفها من الواو لأن الألف إذا كانت عينا فإبدالها من الواو أكثر من إبدالها من الياء.

We concluded that its alif is from waw because when alif is the 'ayn, its substitution from waw is more frequent than its substitution from ya'.

أو هو جبل من زمرد أخضر، وقيل: من ياقوتة خضراء، وأن السماء بيضاء، وإنما اخضرت من خضرته وما من بلد إلا وفيه عرق منه، وعليه ملك يقال: اسمه صلصائيل إذا أراد الله أن يهلك قوما أمره فحرك فخسف بهم كذا ذكره بعض المتكلمين على عجائب المخلوقات.

Or it is a mountain of green emerald, and it was said: of a green ruby, and the sky is white, and it only became green from its greenness. And there is no land but that it has a vein from it, and upon it is an angel named Salsail, who, when Allah intends to destroy a people, orders him, and he moves, and they are swallowed by the earth, thus mentioned some theologians on the wonders of creation.

And it was said: its meaning is 'the matter is decided', as it was said: 'Ha Mim': 'the matter has come'.

And Al-Qā'if: one who knows traces, plural: Qāfah.

وقاف أثره يقوفه قوفا وقيافة: تبعه، كقفاه قفوا، كما في الصحاح

And he tracked his trace, he tracks it (yaqūfuhu) with tracking (qawfan) and tracing (qiyāfatan): he followed him, like he followed him (qafāhu) with following (qufuwwan), as in Al-Sihah.

You lie against me, you keep tracking me as a tracker tracks the traces of a lost camel.

والقائف: الذي يتتبع الآثار، ويعرفها ويعرف شبه الرجل بأخيه وبأبيه، ومنه الحديث: إن مجززا كان قائفا.

And Al-Qā'if: is one who follows traces, and knows them, and knows the resemblance of a man to his brother and his father. And from this is the hadith: 'Indeed, Mujazzaz was a Qā'if'.

ويقال: هو أقوفهم: أي أكثرهم في القوف.

And it is said: 'He is the most Qā'if among them': meaning the most skilled in tracking.

ويقال: هو يتقوف على مالي أي يحجر: علي فيه.

And it is said: 'He is restricting my property': meaning he is placing restrictions on it.

وتقوف فلانا في المجلس: صار يأخذ عليه في كلامه، ويقول له: قل كذا وكذا كما في اللسان والعباب.

And taqawwafa someone in a gathering: he starts to interrupt him in his speech, and says to him: 'Say such and such', as in Al-Lisan and Al-Abab.

والقوف: القذف، مثل القفو، قال: أعوذ بالله الجليل الأعظم من قوفي الشيء الذي لم أعلم كما في اللسان.

And Al-Qawf: is slander, like Al-Qafw. He said: 'I seek refuge in Allah the Great, the Most High, from my slandering that which I do not know', as in Al-Lisan.

والقيافة، بالكسر: تتبع الأثر.

And Al-Qiyāfah, (with kasrah): following the trace.

وتقوفه: تتبعه، أنشد ثعلب: (محلى بأطواق عتاق يبينها على الضزن أغبى الضأن لو يتقوف)

And taqawwafahu: to follow him. Tha'lab recited: (Adorned with fine necklaces, which are evident on the miserable, ignorant sheep, if one were to follow him).
