And Abu Quhafah, Uthman ibn 'Amir ibn 'Amr ibn Ka'b ibn Sa'd ibn Taym ibn Murrah ibn Ka'b ibn Lu'ayy: a companion, father of the Commander of the Faithful Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq, may God be pleased with them both. He embraced Islam on the day of the Conquest, and was brought to the Prophet, and his head was like a thghamah (white plant), so he said: Change this with something, and avoid black.

And everything you اقتحفته from something and extracted is qahafah, and by this the man was named.

عجاجة قحفاء وهي التي تقحف الشيء، أي تذهب به.
