And Al-A'qaf among the Bedouins: the boorish, as transmitted by Al-Jawhari.
والأعوج: أعقف، عن ابن دريد، وأنشد للعبدي: إذا أخذت في يميني ذا القفا وفي شمالي ذا نصاب أعقفا
And Al-A'waj: A'qaf, from Ibn Duraid. He cited Al-Abdi as saying: 'If in my right hand I take this nape, and in my left this bent neck...'

Al-Azhari said: What I know among legumes is Al-Fuqqa', and I do not know Al-'Uqfa'.
قال: العقفاء: ورقه كالسذاب وله زهرة حمراء، وثمرة عقفاء، كأنها شص فيها حب يقتل الشاء، ولا يضر بالإبل، ويقال: هي العقيفاء بالتصغير.
He said: Al-'Uqfa': its leaves are like rue, it has a red flower, and a fruit called 'uqfa', like a hook containing seeds that kill sheep but do not harm camels. It is also said to be Al-'Uqayfa' (diminutive).
والعقافة، كرمانة: خشبة في رأسها حجنة يمد بها الشيء، كالمحجن ويقال: هي الصولجان، ومنه الحديث: فانحنى واعوج، حتى صار كالعقافة.
And Al-'Uqafa, like Rummana: a stick with a hook at its head, used to pull things, like a shepherd's crook. It is also said to be a scepter. From this is the Hadith: 'He bent and crooked, until he became like an 'uqafa'.

So 'Uqfan is the ancestor of the red ants, and Fazar is the ancestor of the black ones, as in Al-'Abab. Ibn Birri transmitted from Daghfal the genealogist that he said: Ants are attributed to 'Uqfan and Fazar; so 'Uqfan is the ancestor of the black ones, and Fazar is the ancestor of the reddish-brown ones, so ponder that.
فالعقيفان: النمل الطويل القوائم يكون في المقابر والخربات، قل: والذر: الذي يكون في البيوت يؤذي الناس، والفازر: المدور الأسود، يكون في التمر، وأنشد: (سلط الذر فازر وعقيفا ... ن فأجلاهم لدار شطون)
So Al-'Uqayfan: the long-legged ants found in graveyards and ruins. It is said: Al-Dhar are those in houses that harm people, and Al-Fazar are the round black ones found in dates. He recited: '(He unleashed) the Dhar, Fazar, and 'Uqayfan... so they drove them out to a distant land.'
وقال أبو حاتم: العقوف، كصبور، من ضروع البقر: ما يخالف شخبه عند الحلب.
Abu Hatim said: Al-'Uquf, like Sabur, from cows' udders: what deviates from its normal flow during milking.
وانقعف: انعوج وانعطف، كما في الصحاح، وهو مطاوع عقفه عقفا
And In'aqafa: to become crooked and bent, as in Al-Sihah, and it is the passive of 'aqafahu 'aqfan.
وتعقف: إذا تعوج.
And Ta'awwaja: if it becomes crooked.
