And I traverse the desert, and between it are... the sounds of jinn and dry skulls.

Whose are the dwellings at Abraq al-'Azzāf... which have become trailing their skirts, flowing?

وكأنني لما حططت إليهم ... رحلي نزلت بأبرق العزاف

And it was as if when I dismounted among them... my mount, I had alighted at Abraq al-'Azzāf.

وعزف الرياح: أصواتها نقله الجوهري.

And 'azf al-riyāḥ: their sounds, as transmitted by Al-Jawhari.

والمعازف: الملاهي التي يضرب بها، كالعود والطنبور والدف، وغيرها.

And 'al-ma'āzif': the instruments of entertainment that are played, like the lute, the tanbur, the tambourine, and others.

إذا سمعن صوت المعازف أيقن أنهن هوالك

When they hear the sound of musical instruments, they know they are doomed.

قيل: إذا أفرد المعزف فهو ضرب من الطنابير، وتتخذه أهل اليمن.

It was said: if 'al-mi'zaf' is singled out, it is a type of tanbur, and the people of Yemen use it.

والعازف: اللاعب بها.

And 'al-'āzif': the one who plays them.

وعيناء مبهاج كأن إزارها ... على واضح الأعطاف من رمل عازف

And a bright-eyed, cheerful one, whose lower garment... is on the clear slopes of a sounding sand dune.

عزف يعزف عزفا: إذا أقام في الأكل والشرب.

'Azafa yu'zifu 'azfan: if he persisted in eating and drinking.

عزق البعير: إذا نزت حنجرته عند الموت.

'Azaqa the camel: if its throat spasmed at death.

والعزف، بالضم: الحمام الطورانية وهي التي لها صوت وهدير.

And 'al-'azf' (with damma): the Turturidae dove, which is the one that has a sound and cooing.

حتى استغاث بأحوى فوقه حبك ... يدعوها هديلا به العزف العزاهيل

Until he sought help from a dark one above him with its plumage... calling them with a cooing sound, the doves, the cooing ones.

أعزف: سمع عزيف الرمال زاد غيره: والرياح وهو ما يسمع من دويها.

'A'zafa: he heard the sound of the sands; others added: and the winds, which is what is heard of their humming.

وأما عزيف الرمال فهو صوت فيه لا يدرى ما هو، وقيل: هو وقوع بعضه على بعض.

As for the sound of the sands, it is a sound within it, the nature of which is unknown; and it was said: it is the falling of some of it upon others.

العزف: الطرق والضرب بالدفوف.

'Al-'azf': the striking and beating of tambourines.

أنه مر بعزف دف، فقال: ما هذا قالوا: ختان، فسكت.

That he passed by the playing of a tambourine, and said: What is this? They said: Circumcision. So he remained silent.

للخوتع الأزرق فيها صاهل ... عزف كعزف الدف والجلاجل وكل لعب عزف.

For the blue hawk, there is a neighing... a playing like the playing of the tambourine and bells, and every game is a playing.

تعازفوا: أي تناشدوا الأراجيز، أو هجا بعضهم بعضا، وقيل: تفاخروا.

'Ta'āzafū': meaning they recited rajaz poems to each other, or some of them satirized others, and it was said: they boasted to each other.

ورجل عزوف عن اللهو: إذا لم يشتهه، وعن النساء: إذا لم يصب إليهن.

And a man 'azūf' (averse) to amusement: if he does not desire it, and from women: if he does not incline towards them.

عزفت القوس عزفا، وعزيفا: صوتت، عن أبي حنيفة.

The bow 'azafat 'azfan and 'azīfan: it made a sound, from Abu Hanifa.

ورمل عازف وعزاف: مصوت.

And 'āzif and 'azzāf sand: sounding.

ومطر عزاف: مجلجل.

And 'azzāf rain: rumbling.

And they named [people] 'Āzif and 'Azīf, like Zubayr.
