He was named Sufah because his mother placed a tuft of wool on his head and made him a devoted servant to the Kaaba.
وكان أحدهم يقوم، فيقول: أجيزي صوفة، فإذا أجازت قال. أجيزي خندف، فإذا أجازت أذن للناس كلهم في الإجازة
And one of them would stand and say: 'Grant permission, O Sufah,' and when she granted permission, he would say, 'Grant permission, O Khindif,' and when she granted permission, all the people were allowed to depart.
فإذا أبطأت بهم قالوا: أجيزي صوفة.
And if she delayed them, they would say: 'Grant permission, O Sufah.'
أو هم قوم من أفناء القبائل، تجمعوا، فتشبكوا كتشبك الصوفة
Or they are people from various tribes who gathered and intertwined like the intertwining of wool.
حتى يقال: أجيزوا آل! صوفانا
Until it is said: 'Grant permission, O family of Sufan!'
حتى يجوز القائم بذلك من آل صفوان.
Until the one responsible from the family of Safwan permits departure.
صاف الكبش بعد ما زمر، يصوف صوفا بالفتح وصووفا كقعود فهو صاف
The ram became woolly after it rutted, it becomes woolly (ṣūfa) with a dammah and (ṣuwūfa) like qū'ūd, so it is woolly (ṣāff).
وهذه على القلب - وصوفاني بالضم، وهي بهاء كل ذلك: إذا كثر صوفه.
And this is by metathesis - and ṣūfānī with a dammah, and she (feminine) with a ta' marbuta for all of that: if its wool is abundant.

Or he is Ṣāfī, like qāḍī, so its place is defective, or his name is Abdullah and Ṣāff is a title for him.

Al-Ṣūfān: everyone who held a position in the service of the House (Kaaba), and likewise al-Ṣūfah.

And they used to serve the Kaaba and practice asceticism, and perhaps the Sufis were attributed to them by resemblance in asceticism and worship, or to the people of the Suffah, so instead of al-Suffah, it is said al-Ṣūfiyyah by changing one of the 'f's to a 'waw' for lightness, or to the wool which is the garment of worshippers and hermits.

And the sea-soufah: something in the shape of this animal wool.
لا آتيك ما بل البحر صوفة
I will not come to you as long as the sea is wet with wool.
الصوفان: شيء يخرج من قلب الشجر، رخو يابس، تقدح فيه النار، وهو أحسن ما يكون للمقتدحين.
Al-Ṣūfān: something that comes out of the heart of a tree, soft and dry, in which fire is struck, and it is the best for fire-starters.
