And it is: the upper earring, as in Al-Sihah, or a dangling piece in the upper part of the ear, said Al-Layth, or what hangs from its upper part, and Al-Ra'thah is in its lower part, said Ibn Al-A'rabi.
وأما علق في أسفلها فقرط، قاله ابن دريد
As for what hangs from its lower part, it is a Qurṭ, said Ibn Duraid.
وقيل: الشنف والقرط واحد
And it is said: Al-Shanf and Al-Qurṭ are the same.
والشنف: النظر إلى الشيء كالمعترض عليه، وهو أن يرفع الإنسان طرفه ناظرا إلى الشيء، كالمتعجب منه، أو كالكاره له
And Al-Shanf: is looking at something as if objecting to it, which is when a person raises their gaze looking at something, as if surprised by it, or as if disliking it.
ومثله الشفن، قاله أبو زيد
And similar to it is Al-Shafn, said Abu Zayd.
شفنفن للنظر البعيد كأنماإرنانها ببوائن الأشطان
They are keen for distant sight as if their neighing is like the sounds of the ropes.
ومنه الحديث:) مالي أرى قومك قد شنفوا لك
And from it is the Hadith: 'Why do I see your people have become displeased with you?'
فهو شنف، ككتف
So it is Shanf, like Katif.
ولن تداوى علة القلب الشنف
And the ailment of the heart, displeasure, will not be cured.
أي: متغضبا
Meaning: angry.
وشنف له، وبه فطن
And Shanifa to him, and with it he perceived.
وتقول قد شنف العدو فقل لها ... ما للعدو بغيرنا لا يشنف
And you say the enemy has become displeased, so tell her... Why does the enemy not become displeased with anyone but us?
والصحيح أن شنف في البغضة معتدية بغير حرف، وفي الفطنة معتدية بحرفين متعاقبين، كما يتعدى فطن بهما
And the correct view is that Shanifa in the sense of dislike is transitive without a preposition, and in the sense of perception, it is transitive with two consecutive prepositions, just as Faṭana is transitive with them.
وإذا قلت: فطن له، وبه.
And if you say: Faṭana to him, and with it.
وانقلبت شفته العليا من أعلى، فهي شفة شنفاء
And his upper lip turned upwards from the top, so it is an upturned lip.
ويقال: مالي أراك شانفا عنى، وخانفا
And it is said: Why do I see you turning away from me, and being aloof?
وإنه لشانف عنا بأنفه: أي رافع، وهو مجاز
And indeed he is turning away from us with his nose raised: meaning haughty, and this is metaphorical.
ناقة مشنوفة: أي مزمومة
A bridled she-camel: meaning controlled.
أشنف الجارية، وقال غيره: شنفها، تشنيفا، كلاهما بمعنى: جعل لها شنفا
To put an earring on the girl, and others said: Shanfaha, Tashnifan, both meaning: to give her an earring.
وكذلك: قرطها تقريطا، فتشنفت هي، كما تقول: تقرطت
And likewise: Qaraṭaha, Taqriṭan, so she adorned herself, as you say: Taqaṭṭarat.
شنف إليه، يشنف، شنفا: نظر بمؤخر العين
Shanifa to him, yashnifu, shanfan: to look with the corner of the eye.
ومن المجاز: شنف كلامه، وقرطه
And from the metaphorical uses: Shanf his speech, and Qaraṭ his speech.
