السلف: القرض الذي لا منفعة فيه للمقرض، غير الأجر والشكر، وعلى المقترض رده كما أخذه، هكذا تسميه العرب
As-salaf: the loan from which the lender derives no benefit, other than reward and gratitude, and the borrower must return it as they took it; this is what the Arabs call it.
أحدهما كل عمل صالح قدمته، أو فرط فرط لك فهو لك سلف، وقد سلف له عمل صالح
One of them is every good deed you have done, or a negligence you have committed, it is a precursor for you, and he has done good deeds in advance.
كل من تقدمك من آبائك، وذوى قرابتك، الذين هم فوقك في السن والفضل، واحدهم سالف
Everyone who preceded you from your fathers and your relatives, who are above you in age and merit, one of them is a salif.
مضوا سلفا قصد السبيل عليهم ... وصرف المنايا بالرجال تقلب

And an arḍ sulafah, like fariḥah: sparse of trees, said Abu Amr.
والسلف، بالفتح: الجراب ما كان، أو الضخم منه، كما في الصحاح، أو هو: أديم لم يحكم دبغه، كأنه الذي أصاب أول الدباغ، ولم يبلغ آخره
And as-salaf, with fatha: the waterskin, whatever it may be, or a large one of them, as in as-Siḥāḥ, or it is: a hide whose tanning was not completed, as if it was the beginning of the tanning process, and it did not reach its end.
وما لنا زاد إلا السلفمن التمر
And we have no provisions except the waterskin of dates.
أخذت لهم سلفى حتى وبرنسا ... وسحق سراويل وجرد شليل
I took for them a waterskin, even a wool cloak... and ground trousers and a stripped garment.
والسلفة، بالضم: اللمجة، وهو ما يتعجله الإنسان من الطعام قبل الغداء، كاللهنة

يقال جاءوا سلفة سلفة: إذا جاء بعضهم في أثر بعض

As-Salaf: the young of the partridge: pl. sulafan, like surdan, as in as-Siḥāḥ, and it is also pronounced with damma, as in al-Lisān.
أعالج سلفانا صغارا تخالهم ... إذا درجوا بجر الحواصل حمرا
I am tending to small partridges, you would think them... when they crawl, their crops are red.

سلافة: اسم امرأة من بني سهم
Sulafah: the name of a woman from Banu Sahm.
السلافة: الخمر، كالسلاف بغير هاء، وهو أول ما يعصر منها، وقيل: ما سال من غير عصر، وقيل: هو أول ما ينزل منها
As-Sulafah: wine, like as-sulaf without ha, and it is the first that is pressed from it, and it was said: what flows without pressing, and it was said: it is the first that comes out of it.
السلاف والسلافة من الخمر: أخلصها وأفضلها، وذلك إذا تحلب من العنب بلا عصر ولا مرث، وكذلك من التمر والزبيب، ما لم يعدء عليه الماء بعد تحلب أوله
As-sulaf and as-sulafah from wine: its purest and finest, and that is when it flows from the grapes without pressing or crushing, and likewise from dates and raisins, as long as water has not touched it after its initial flow.
كأن مكاكي الجواء غدية ... صبحن سلافا من رحيق مفلفل

On the morning when the Mushrifiyyah swords struck among them... at Sulaf on the day of the crowded pass.
والسلوف، كصبور: الناقة التي تكون في أوائل الإبل إذا وردت الماء نقله الجوهري، وقد سلفت، سلوفا
And as-suluf, like ṣabūr: the she-camel that is among the first camels when they approach water, narrated by al-Jawhari, and she has sulufan, sulufan.
السلوف ما طال من نصال السهام
As-suluf is what is long from the arrowheads.
شك كلاها بسلوف سندري
Both of its sides were pierced by long Sindari arrowheads.
السلوف: السريع من الخيل
As-suluf: the swift of horses.
والسالفة: الأمم الماضية أمام الغابرة، جمعه: السوالف
And as-salifah: the past nations before the later ones, its plural is: as-sawalif.
يقال. كان ذلك في الأمم السالفة، والقرون السوالف
It is said. That was in the preceding nations and the past centuries.
ولاقت مناياها القرون السوالف
And the past centuries met their fates.
لأقاتلنهم على أمري حتى تنفرد سالفتي
I will fight them over my affair until my salifah is separated.
هي صفحة العنق، وهما سالفتان من جانبيه، وكنى بانفرادها عن الموت، لأنها لا تنفرد عما يليها إلا بالموت، وقيل: أراد حتى يفرق بين رأسي وجسدي
It is the side of the neck, and they are two salifatan on its sides, and its separation is a metaphor for death, because it does not separate from what is next to it except by death, and it was said: he meant until my head and my body are separated.
وناحية مقدم العنق من لدن معلق القرط إلى قلت الترقوة السالفة من الفرس، وغيره: هاديته، أي ما تقدم من عنقه، كما في العباب، واللسان
And the area of the front of the neck from the earring's attachment to the collarbone's prominence is the salifah of the horse, and others: its neck, meaning what precedes of its neck, as in al-'Abāb and al-Lisān.
والسلف، ككبد، وكبد، الأخير بالكسر: الجلد، هكذا في سائر النسخ، والمراد به غرلة الصبي، وفي بعضها: الخلد، بضم الخاء المعجمة، وهو غلط
And as-salaf, like kabid, and kabid, the latter with kasra: the skin, as is in all copies, and what is meant by it is the foreskin of the boy, and in some of them: al-khuld, with damma of the khā' mu'jamah, and this is an error.
والسلف، باللغتين من الرجل: زوج أخت امرأته
And as-salaf, in both pronunciations for a man: the husband of his wife's sister.
يقال: بينهما أسلوفة، بالضم: أي صهر، نقله الصاغاني
It is said: between them is usluufah, with damma: meaning kinship by marriage, narrated by as-Saghani.
وقد تسالفا: أخذ كل منهما أخت امرأته، وهما سلفان، بالكسر: أي: متزوجا الأختين
And they may have married each other's sisters: each of them took the sister of his wife, and they are salifān, with kasra: meaning, married to the two sisters.
ويقال أيضا: السلفان، بفتح فكسر، فإما أن يكون السلفان مغيرا عن السلفان. وإما أن يكون وضعأ
And it is also said: as-salafān, with fatha then kasra, so either as-salafān is a variation of as-salifān. Or it is an established term.
معاتبة السلفين تحسن مرة ... فإن أدمنا إكثارها أفسدا الحبا
Reproaching the two brothers-in-law is good once... but if they persist in excessive reproaching, they spoil the affection.
السلفتان، بالكسر: المرأتان تحت الأخوين، أو خاص بالرجال، وليس في النساء سلفة، وهذا قول ابن الأعرابي، نقله ابن سيده
As-siliftān, with kasra: the two women married to two brothers, or specific to men, and there is no sulafah for women, and this is the saying of Ibn al-A'rabi, narrated by Ibn Sidah.

وأما ما في فهرست أبي محمد عبد الله بن حوط الله أنه منسوب إلى قرية من قرى أصبهان، اسمها سلفة، فغلط، والصواب ما ذكرنا
